Cleanse, spiritual and otherwise ///
Jamaica means "Land of Wood and Water" in the now extinct Arawak language - and there is plenty of both! Rivers are mentioned in countless songs and pictured in music videos and occupy a great space in public opinion and interest. The rivers which come forth from aquifers in the wooded interior of the island, as well as springs high in the hills, provide many uses for locals: Fishing, Washing, a place for spiritual solace or ceremony for baptists, and a place for children to play and swim. On a calm early morning the riverbank can be a a very special place to be. Here Wag Water river slowly meanders towards Annotto Bay...

USAIN BOLT: 9.63!!!

Photo: Martei Korley Subject: Werl' Boss of Athletics ///
Patrons at Tracks and Records, Usain Bolt's aptly named sports bar and theme restaurant in Kingston, roar for the BIG MAN. After tropical storm winds disrupted a planned public viewing of the men's 100-meter finals at Jamaica's independence village, crowds rushed here, among other places, to catch Bolt's long-awaited showdown with countryman Yohan Blake and Justin Gatlin. Bolt, who was slow out the blocks, blazed to victory, setting a new Olympic record. Who really doubted him anyway? Although temperatures in England weren't exactly ideal for the event, the warm spirit of the Jamaican people on the eve of Jamaica's 50th independence guided him on, it seems.

East Indians in the West Indies

Photo: Martei Korley Subject: Indian Arrival Day, Jamaica ///
A dancer receives accolades after performing a traditional Indian dance in the pouring rain at the recent Indian Arrival Day Celebrations.
After the emancipation of the Jamaican slaves in 1838, a huge labor gap existed in the island. Funny enough, the colonial administration seemed confused that the loss of free labor had such a profound impact on their economy. So they decided to import labor in the form of indentured labors from the Indian subcontinent. As a result, ships began transporting indians en masse to the caribbean in 1845. The first ship arrived in Jamaica with 261 Indians on board, May 12th of that year in Old Harbour Bay, not too far from Chedwin Park where commemoration festivities were being held in the pouring rain. Among the great contributions of Indian people to Caribbean culture are Mango, Roti, Curry, Pilorie, Doubles, Diwali, Ganja/Collie (Hindi words, btw.), musicians from Supercat to Sundar Popo to many of the players on the West Indies cricket team; movers and shakers in all walks of life throughout the region. There were at least as many non-Indians as people of Indian descent at this celebration, a testimony to the level of integration this culture has achieved. Or you could just take a visual clue from the outfit and the speaker boxes, of course...
