High Fidelity: Dre Skull’s Loudspeaker Riddim

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Dre Skull and Mixpak Records have an excellent new riddim called Loudspeaker on the way May 22, and they’ve just released this clip hosted by our bredrin Walshy Fire as a preview of what’s in store. The ethereal riddim itself has nuff vibes, and the release has some of our favorite artists: Popcaan, Beenie Man, Machel Montano and our very own Punany Monologues columnist Natalie Storm. Feel like there’s a summer anthem in there somewhere but can’t quite call which it is yet. Which one do you think will buss?

Audio: Major Lazer + Amber Coffman “Get Free”

Words by Jesse Serwer—

After teasing it for weeks, Major Lazer today released the second single from its upcoming sophomore LP, the name of which we still don’t know. “Get Free” features Amber Coffman of Dirty Projectors (maybe you heard her on “A Peace of Light” from The Roots’ How I Got Over album) on lead vocals, and is available for the price of your e-mail address at Major Lazer’s website. And if that price is too high, you can just check out the animated video for the song, which also appeared today, below. While Coffman’s vocals may take a little getting used to, the indie rock-meets-reggae vibes on the riddim are nice and easy—we see a lot of remixes in its future.

LargeUp Interview: Q+A with Walshy Fire

Words by Jesse Serwer—

A good friend of the LargeUp family and a behind-the-scenes contributor as well, Kingston-born Leighton Paul Walsh, A/K/A Walshy Fire, has been holding down South Florida for a decade as a selector and MC on the world famous Black Chiney Sound System. An avid sound system historian with an astounding knowledge of dancehall music, Walshy is also something of an ambassador for Caribbean culture in Miami, bringing a little Jamaican flavor to institutions like the Miami New World Symphony. It’s those qualities that made him the perfect choice for his latest role: as the new MC for Major Lazer, bringing some authentic soundman flavor to Diplo’s over-the-top dancehall project. Here, Walshy speaks for the first time on his new gig and his history in Miami’s dancehall scene.

LargeUp x Rice and Peas x WMC x Mr. Vegas in Miami (3/21)

Words by LargeUp Crew—

Each March, Winter Music Conference brings what feels like a majority of the world’s DJs to Miami but amongst all the house, trance and occasional hip-hop going on, dancehall always seems to get left out of the mix. To remedy the situation, this year LargeUp is bringing New York City’s best dancehall party, Rice and Peas, to Ricochet in Miami during WMC. Even better, the event, on Wed. March 21, doubles as a release party for Mr. Vegas’ Sweet Jamaica LP, an easy frontrunner for the year’s best reggae/dancehall album in our collective opinion.
