Audio: Popcaan x Dre Skull, “The System”

Words by Jesse Serwer, via The Fader

Last week, we brought you the world premiere of the first tune from Dre Skull’s Loudspeaker riddim, Machel Montano’s “Go Down.” A few days on and we now have Popcaan’s “The System” taking things in a completely different direction—both for the riddim and the artist himself. Known for his breezy party tunes, Poppi throws his hat into the social commentary arena with “The System,” and he wears it well. The Vybz Kartel heir apparent is rapidly developing as an artist, and, after hearing “The System,” it seems conscious material will be part of his repertoire. Stream it below, and look out for more tunes from Loudspeaker to drop soon, via Mixpak.

Gaza Some More: Busta Rhymes x Vybz Kartel, “Wine & Go Down”

Words by Jesse Serwer—

We like Busta when he’s on his New York shit, we don’t even mind Busta when he’s on his global domination superhero/villain shit, but we really love him when he’s on his Jamaican shit. Ever since he made his debut with Leaders of the New School back in ’91, Trevor Smith has been one of hip-hop’s primary ambassadors for dancehall culture, with his rugged, deejay-inspired flow, and his frequent collaborations with dancehall artists.

Toppa Top 10: Ten Slept-On Weed Anthems For 4/20

Words by Jesse Serwer and Herbert Spliffington—

On this very day one year ago, we brought you our Toppa Top 10 weed tunes for 4/20. We missed some sure, but this was our countdown of the classics, those indisputable smokers anthems every reggae fan knows. In an effort to one-up our own selves, this year we thought we’d go a little deeper into the stacks and bring your attention to some hi-powered ganja anthems you might not remember, and not just because you forgot where you put them in your record crate. Some are more obscure than others, but they’re all deserving of rediscovery. Enjoy.

Interview: Diplo On The Politics of Outsider Dancehall

Words by Jesse Serwer, Interview by Eddie STATS Houghton—

Okayplayer head honcho Eddie STATS Houghton recently sat down with Diplo and Chief Boima of Dutty Artz and Ghetto Bassquake fame for a wide-ranging conversation themed around the politics of the emerging music phenomenon known as tropical bass. The concept was inspired in part by a long-running, Twitter-fueled debate between Boima and Diplo regarding the current globalization of underground music, and set out as its aim bringing that conversation to some sort of resolution. Among too many other topics to name, the conversation touched on the politics behind Major Lazer and Diplo’s interaction with the dancehall. Read below to see how that particular segment of the conversation played out. And if you never have, catch our LargeUp TV episode with Diplo in Jamaica for more on his interaction and background with dancehall culture.

Mixtape Mondays: Spyda the DJ, Stone Love, DJ Maya

Words by Jesse Serwer—

The man DJ Theory is sidelined with some symptoms of late winter-itis (look out for him to make a full recovery in time for his gigs at South by Southwest next week, though) this week but no worries—like the Postal Service, Mixtape Mondays delivers in rain, hail and snow.
