LargeUp Premiere: Freddie McGregor’s “Bagga Hype” Video

Words by Jesse Serwer—

freddie-mcgregor

Freddie McGregor celebrated the start of his 50th year in the music business (Yes, he’s only 57; he got started at 7!) in January with the release of a new album, Di Captain. “Bagga Hype” is definitely one of the standout tracks from that effort. The song’s lyrics address the out-of-control, reckless behavior McGregor observes amoung many young Jamaicans, particularly those representing their country via the music business (or so it sounds to our ears at least), and the impact it has on the country at large: When mi talk to dem, dem say ‘respect due’ but dem nuh have none for me and you/Hotting up the place ’cause it’s pure curfew/Mek di Babylon dem a pressure me and you. Heavy stuff.

Lion Share: Snoop + Gyptian Freestyle on the Kuff Riddim

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Snoop and Gyptian VP Records

Just when we were thinking about putting Snoop on the permanent pay-no-mind list (c’mon son), Mr. Lion has gone ahead and done something kinda cool. Namely freestyling over the classic ’80s dancehall riddim Kuff (the Wittys Shelly Thunder version, not the Jammys version, to be specific) with Gyptian on the Randy’s Reggae radio show during Snoop’s in-store appearance at the VP Records store in Queens. We’re not saying the Doggfather’s freestyle is mindblowing or nuthin’, but for a guy who doesn’t write his own lyrics anymore, he comes off alright.

Album Stream + CD Giveaway: Yellowman’s “Young, Gifted & Yellow”

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Yellowman

Young, Gifted & Yellow is the name of VP Records/17 North Parade’s new Yellowman anthology. The disc, the title of which slyly references Nina Simone’s classic “Young, Gifted & Black,” features the lion’s share of Yellow’s classics from “Zungguzungguguzungguzeng” and “Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt” through to “I’m Getting Married in the Morning” and its inevitable sequel, “I’m Getting Divorced.”

LargeUp Premiere: Sizzla, “Good Love”

Words by Jesse Serwer—
SSizzla - The Messiah - Artwork

In most years, the uber-prolific Sizzla would already have several albums out by this time. But the singer, still recovering from last year’s serious motorcycle accident, is just now getting set to release his first 2013 LP, The Messiah, through his Kalonji label, via VP Records. We recently received a preview of the album—reportedly Sizzla’s 70th—and one of the tracks that really grabbed our attention was “Good Love.” And not just because it’s Sizzla’s third song by that title (he previously appeared on a hip-hop influenced Lady Saw tune by that name, and released one of his own in 2011).

Album Stream: Freddie McGregor’s “Di Captain”

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Freddie McGregor

This year marks Freddie McGregor’s 50th in the music business, but don’t jump to any conclusions: he got his start at age seven, singing with vocal group The Clarendonians, back when he was known as “Little Freddie.”

Photo Series: New York’s Dancehall Record Spots

Words by Jesse Serwer, Photos by Aymann Ismail—

Moodies Records Bronx

Like every other city, New York has seen most of its record stores close up shop in recent years. But, even as dancehall and reggae have seen some of the sharpest declines in sales, an overwhelming number of NYC’s remaining record shops are those specializing in Jamaican music. These include decades-old standbys Moodies Records in the Bronx and Keeling Reggae in Brooklyn, and more recent arrivals like Deadly Dragon and Miss Lily’s Variety. Something about the music’s deep roots and the sense of community between the shoppers and shopkeepers has helped them survive in an era where shops specializing in rock, jazz and rap largely have not.
