Marley’s Mellow Mood and the Marley family are launching a national search to find “the next great artist or band in the tradition of Bob Marley.” Prizes for the Marley’s Music Uprising contest include opportunities to perform on the Sierra Nevada, Electric Forest and Gathering of the Vibes music festivals this summer, and a grand-prize studio session at Tuff Gong Studio with Stephen Marley.

Video: Watch Snoop Lion’s “La La La”

As you’ve probably heard, hip-hop icon Snoop Dogg recently took his career in a radical new direction, inspired by reggae, Bob Marley and the message of Rastafari. Snoop spent some time in Jamaica last winter to work on his debut reggae album, holding a press conference at Manhattan’s Miss Lily’s (where the pics in this post were shot) to announce his transformation from rapper to reggae artist and trading his canine status in for his new feline moniker,  Snoop Lion.

Reggae crooner Gyptian was selected to rep Jamaica as one of four international artists in the MTV Iggy/Chevy Spark “Cover the World” campaign. The cover song selected for Gyptian was Cyndi Lauper’s “True Colors” and it flows perfectly with his upcoming album titled SLR, which stands for Sex Love and Reggae.

Toppa Top 10: Reggae-Inspired Kicks

Spring is here! Which means Summer will be hotstepping around the corner any minute. While we here at LargeUp have kept our Clarks on for what seems like all winter, we don’t mind diversifying our portfolios when the weather nices up. These trainers manage to pull off top-ranking status from the sidelines by putting an international spotlight on the marginalized world of reggae and dancehall culture. Paying homage to the iconic Red, Gold & Green color combination didn’t necessarily qualify items to appear on this list. Don’t get us wrong–it didn’t hurt. Together those colors symbolize a deeper meaning, which many of the cut/paste/iron-on-patch sneakers simply can’t live up to. But it was meaningful and creative executions which truly qualified these kicks for thanks and praise. LargeUp and enjoy…
