Trini To D’Bone: Watch Trinidad James’ “Females Welcomed” Video

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Trinidad James Females Welcomed

Atlanta’s Trinidad James continues to rep his Trini roots, this time with a video shot in Port of Spain by hip-hop photographer (and honorary Trini) Jonathan Mannion. “Females Welcomed” stands out on Trinidad James’ Don’t Be S.A.F.E. mixtape for its unusual structure—it’s basically two tracks in one, a fairly typical rap-and-hook thing to start, then a trippy club track. Mannion’s video, filmed during James’ first visit back to his native Trinidad since skyrocketing to fame late last year, reflects these dual energies. As with the music, the first half is more straightforward, giving us a look at some sexy females and typical Port of Spain scenery, while the second half absorbs the mystical vibes of Carnival —it was shot around Carnival time in February.

Well, a Japanese crew called Carnival Flavor have just opened a whole ‘nother can of rum-soaked, flag-waving worms with their “Jump Up” video.

Machel Fog video

If you’re ready for Carnival, but can’t revel in the bacchanal of Trinidad & Tobago’s second-to none annual street party (the best street party in the world, in our opinion) today and tomorrow, these videos are sure to make you feel as if you touched di road! Watch some of the best (and worst) Trini soca clips released during the run-up to this week’s Carnival, from Machel Montano, the Roy Cape All-Stars & Blaxx and more. (And, for even more soca madness, download LargeUp’s Fog Up D Place mixtape from Major Lazer’s Jillionaire).

Iz Ah Trini: Trinidad James On Trinidad (+”All Gold Everything” Soca Remix)

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Trinidad James Shaggy

Rapper Trinidad James returned to his birthplace of Trinidad last week, performing at Machel Montano’s Machel Mondays concert and shooting a video for his new single “Females Welcome,” with a cameo from Shaggy. While there, he also released a soca remix (though soca-ish would describe it better) of his hit single “All Gold Everything” featuring Machel, Pitbull and Shaggy (Stream it, and watch a clip of him performing it at Machel Mondays with all three below). It seems Trinidad is really repping his Trini roots. And, to think, we weren’t sure if he was really Trini when we first came across him.
