Audio: The Heatwave Bring “Pum Pum Bax”

Words by DJ Theory—

Whoa gosh.. another dancefloor destroyer here courtesy of our folks across the lake at The Heatwave headquarters. For this concoction they blend x-rated vocals from Tommy Lee, Busy Signal and Natalie Storm with the infectious 2-step tune “Bax” from London killa Mosca, and it results in a clever crossover refix that’s a UK deejay’s wet dream.. Couldn’t help but recall our girl The Large‘s version as well, which also knocks. Stream Pum Pum Bax below or cop the free download here. Nice one!

Fashion Fridays: 21st Hapilos Dancehall Tees

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Cham Lawless tee

What do RDX’s “Jump,” Tommy Lee’s “Psycho” and Popcaan’s “When Mi Party” all  have in common? Besides for being some of 2012′s biggest dancehall singles, they’re all now T-shirts from dancehall promo don Johnny Wonder’s 21st Hapilos, the digital distribution company which helped break them. Other tees—each of which features the digital single cover art of the respective song—include Cham’s “Lawless,” Kartel’s “Mentally Free,” Konshens’ “A So Mi Tan,” and the Wild Bubble riddim. Check them all out here, and go here to buy.

Tommy Lee Sparta photo by Martei Korley

On a windy afternoon this August, LargeUp creative director/co-founder/chief photographer Martei Korley and myself traveled to the New Kingston apartment of Tommy Lee—or, as he’s now 100% officially known, Tommy Lee Sparta—to interview dancehall’s most talked-about new artist, for The Fader. We watched Jamaica’s 1-2-3 finish in the men’s 200-meter final at the Olympics (after which Usain Bolt gave TV cameras the Gaza salute while boasting “Man, psycho!”) in the artist’s living room, and talked about why his music is so dark (he’s got some pretty compelling reasons), his plans to make conscious tunes (sample his first one, “No Love” over at MissGaza.com), and his desire to be a role model for di youth dem. Read the full story, which appears in the magazine’s upcoming Issue #82, out on newsstands next week, here.

Tommy Lee’s Thriller: Watch the Video for “Shook (Uncle Demon)”

Words by Jesse Serwer–

As his star has grown, dancehall’s newest star Tommy Lee has come under fire for the demonic imagery invoked in his lyrics. While it’s easy to understand why people, particularly in Jamaica, are troubled by the darkness that pervades the Vybz Kartel protege’s music, it seems that his motives are more theatrical than diabolical.

Check It Deeply: Caribbean Music’s New Dark Side

Words by Jesse Serwer—

LargeUp Haleek Maul

Haleek Maul is a 16-year-old kid making some of the grimmest rap we’ve ever heard from a yute. Notably, he’s from sunny Barbados, home of Alison Hinds, Ri-Ri and Cropover. Maul was born in New York, and spends his summers here in the States, which perhaps helps explain his inclination towards dark imagery and woozy, creepy beats a little more. Witness his latest video for “M00N,” off of his recent collaborative LP, Chrome Lips, with Chicago producers Supreme Cuts. Directed by the editor of Vice, the visuals are bathed in horror-movie reds. Nothing we haven’t seen before, but the sort of thing we haven’t really seen from the Caribbean, with one notable, recent exception
