Dungeons + Dancehall: Watch The Bug’s “Kill Them/Louder” Video

Words by Jesse Serwer—

acid-ragga

Before Tommy Lee Sparta got all “Psycho” and started calling himself “Uncle Demon”—in fact, before Tommy Lee even hit puberty—Kevin Martin was making gothic dancehall under his pseudonym, The Bug. A veteran of Britain’s industrial scene, Martin’s music wasn’t exactly dancehall—it was too outsider-y to call it that—but a savvy derivative of it that combined modern Jamaican electronic production style with dark, less danceable elements of European electronic music. Now, they call what he was doing then dubstep.

On a windy afternoon this August, LargeUp creative director/co-founder/chief photographer Martei Korley and myself traveled to the New Kingston apartment of Tommy Lee—or, as he’s now 100% officially known, Tommy Lee Sparta—to interview dancehall’s most talked-about new artist, for The Fader. We watched Jamaica’s 1-2-3 finish in the men’s 200-meter final at the Olympics (after which Usain Bolt gave TV cameras the Gaza salute while boasting “Man, psycho!”) in the artist’s living room, and talked about why his music is so dark (he’s got some pretty compelling reasons), his plans to make conscious tunes (sample his first one, “No Love” over at MissGaza.com), and his desire to be a role model for di youth dem. Read the full story, which appears in the magazine’s upcoming Issue #82, out on newsstands next week, here.

Tommy Lee’s Thriller: Watch the Video for “Shook (Uncle Demon)”

Words by Jesse Serwer–

As his star has grown, dancehall’s newest star Tommy Lee has come under fire for the demonic imagery invoked in his lyrics. While it’s easy to understand why people, particularly in Jamaica, are troubled by the darkness that pervades the Vybz Kartel protege’s music, it seems that his motives are more theatrical than diabolical.
