Throwback Thursdays: Boney M’s “Rivers of Babylon”

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Boney M Rivers of Babylon

In the late 1970s, few musical acts in Europe were bigger than Boney M. While the brains behind the outfit was German producer Frank Farian, the group itself was 100% Caribbean, consisting of vocalists Liz Mitchell and Marcia Barrett from Jamaica, Bobby Farrell from Aruba and Maizie Williams from Montserrat.

Come Back Around: Download Jimmy Cliff’s “One More” + “Rebirth” Album Details

Words by Jesse Serwer—

We’re betting you know by now that Jimmy Cliff has a new album produced by punk rock luminary Tim Armstrong (Rancid, Operation Ivy) on the way. Well, that record, a follow up to the Sacred Fire EP the duo hit us with last year, now has a name, a track listing and a release date. Rebirth, which includes 10 original tracks plus covers of The Clash’s “Guns of Brixton” and Rancid’s “Ruby Soho,” drops July 17 through Universal Music. And the man who told us The harder they come, the harder they fall and You can get if if you really want may yet have another song for the ages in his bag. “One More,” which he performed on David Letterman a few weeks back, is a TUNE, an anthem for music lovers and makers that captures the ecstasy and anticipation of closing time, when all everybody wants to hear is jus’ one more.

Call For Submissions: First International Reggae Poster Contest

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Reggae probably has the richest poster art tradition of any music culture. From the red, gold and green Bob Marley concert posters replicated on college students’ dorm rooms to the ubiquitous homemade dancehall signs which still abound in Jamaica’s public spaces, there is a colorful shadow history echoing that of the music it promotes. To celebrate and encourage the continuation of this folk art, Kingston-born poster designer Michael Thompson conceived of the First International Reggae Poster Contest. The call for submissions is open until March 30, after which the best posters will be collected into a book and, naturally, reproduced as posters. Designers are invited to design posters related to ska, rocksteady, roots reggae, dancehall, dub and sound systems. There are no cash prizes, but first place gets you a 16-gig iPad, Tougher Than Tough: The Story Of Jamaican Music and Bob Marley and the Wailers: Live Forever boxed sets and The Harder They Come DVD/CD packages (And second gets you all of that but the iPad). Artists, get drawing and enter your work here.
