Impressions: Emancipation Day 2012 at Jamaica 50 Jubilee Village

Words and Photos by Martei Korley—

Jamaica is famously celebrating its 50 anniversary August 6th, but it was the customary Emancipation Day celebrations August 1st which officially kickced off a great series of island-wide events. Staged on the grounds of the National Stadium, the event also marked the opening of the the Jamaica 50 Golden Jubilee Village expo and performance venue. Military bands, folk singers, the National Dance Theatre, a reading of  Trevor Rhone‘s ‘Ole’ Story Time’, reggae performances—it was all packed into a very quickly moving schedule. Here is the first installment in LargeUp’s coverage of Jamaica 50.

Kiwi-Hall: Check Out Daniel Bedingfield’s New Sound

Words by Emily Shapiro—

New Zealand native Daniel Bedingfield first made a name for himself in the UK garage scene a decade ago with three UK No. 1 singles and a hit 2002 album, Gotta Get Thru This. The brother of pop sensation Natasha Bedingfield has been relatively quiet since then but it appears that during his hiatus, Bedingfield spent time writing music and collaborating with artists in Jamaica like Tessanne Chin and Busy Signal. He developed a relationship with VP Records and, apparently, a taste for creating some dancehall-like music of his own.

Ackee And Salt-Phish: Top jamband Phish tribute Gregory Isaacs

Words by DJ Gravy

It seems you can find reggae obsessives just about everywhere. You may not think of Jamaica when you see masses of (mostly) white kids at a jamband show or festival but there is an undeniable connection beyond just those donning dreadlocks. Phish happen to be the biggest touring act on this circuit (and one of the highest grossing bands on tour ever.) They’ve always incorporated reggae into their widely versatile sound since their genesis in 1983 and their crowd see a cultural connection that could be overlooked but definitely holds some validity.
