Visual Culture: Caribbean Art Takes Over NYC

New York City is the biggest melting pot for Caribbean culture there is, so it’s affirming to see the city’s cultural institutions finally put together an event that’s reflective of this. Spread out between three venues—El Museo del Barrio (through Jan. 6); Queens Museum of Art (through Jan. 6); and the Studio Museum in Harlem (through Oct. 21)— “Caribbean: Crossroads of the World” is “the big art event of the summer season in New York,” The New York Times wrote, and “likely the most expansive art event of the summer,” according to ArtInfo.

Caribbean Collections, a new showcase for Caribbean designers at London Fashion Week, made its debut last month, giving selected designers from across the region the opportunity to showcase for discerning London buyers and press. Among the most talked about exhibitors at the well-received showcase, which also included Trinidad’s Meiling and Haitian handbag designer Phelecia Dell, was a less familiar name from a country somewhat less known for its style: Suriname jeweller Atelier Doré.

Toppa Top 10: Caribbean Footballers

Four years ago, the hype in this part of the world—Brooklyn—was all about Trinidad’s Soca Warriors, then making their first ever World Cup run. T&T didn’t qualify this year, nor did any other Caribbean nation, but that doesn’t mean the region isn’t represented in this year’s tournament. Antilleans make up a key cross section of the French team’s lineup—much as they did when France reached the 2006 finals—while England’s lineup features players with roots in Antigua, Barbados and Jamaica. Here’s a look at some of the top Caribbean and Caribbean-descended players in this year’s Cup, plus a few more who’ve proven themselves on the world stage recently.
