LargeUp Premiere: DJ Pierre feat. Rory Stone Love, “Seleckta (Jamroc Remix)”

Words by Jesse Serwer

Selecka DJ Pierre x Jamroc

Chicago house music pioneer DJ Pierre has a new, dancehall-inspired single out today featuring legendary Jamaican sound man Rory of Stone Love fame out on hipster EDM label, Dim Mak Records. If that’s not novel enough for you, the DJ duo—and the certified dons of dance music in Jamaica— Alric & Boyd (Federation Sound, FAME FM) got the job of remixing the single, called “Seleckta.” Actually, the mix is the debut of Jamroc, their new production team with Douglas Harper, a/k/a Ben-J.A.H. Look out for more Jamroc releases, including a remix of “Acid Dreams” by the Detroit Grand Poo Bahs remix and their first single “Head Bass,” both out on DJ Pierre’s AATRAXX label, within the month.

Mixtape Mondays: Spyda the DJ, Stone Love, DJ Maya

Words by Jesse Serwer—

The man DJ Theory is sidelined with some symptoms of late winter-itis (look out for him to make a full recovery in time for his gigs at South by Southwest next week, though) this week but no worries—like the Postal Service, Mixtape Mondays delivers in rain, hail and snow.

Young, Fresh and Green: Jamaica’s First Eco Music Festival

By Jesse Serwer, via Jamaica Gleaner

In the US, attending a music festival more often than not means heading to the middle of nowhere and camping in a tent. Not so in the Caribbean, where they are generally held in or close to cities and resorts. So the organizers of the Green 4 Life Eco-Music Festival were extra strategic in picking a remote, waterfall-side location in rural St. Elizabeth (in a place called Maggotty, to be specific) for what they are billing as the first green music festival in the Caribbean. “Our mission is to raise awareness about Jamaica’s environment, using audio and visual aids,” said Yolande Rattray-Wright, the festival’s producer. “For patrons to see why we need to preserve Jamaica and its beauty.” While Stone Love, G-Whizz, Proteje, Admiral Tibet, Lady G and Lovindeer (there’s a name you probably haven’t heard in a while) are among the acts on the bill, the July 2 event will function just as significantly as a showcase for green products and local foods.
