AUDIO: Jus Now Remix Machel Montano + Kes the Band

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Jus-Now

Jus Now, the international production combo consisting of Bristol, England’s Interface and T&T-based LAZAbeam, are making some of the freshest soca  right now. (They also made one of the coolest videos we’ve seen all year, for the soca-inspired-but not-exactly-soca title track from their One Time EP)  “Differentology” excepted, they’re responsible for a currently scorching Bunji Garlin’s best tracks this year, including the calypso-fueled “Savage” and “Tun Up” off the aforementioned One Time. LazaBEAM, operating solo, produced another recent Bunji favorite, “The Canvas”

Mixtape Mondays: Coppershot x Busy Signal, High Grade Sound, Major & Minor Productions

Words by Deejay Theory —

MM 45

We’re broadcasting live from Tokyo this week, on my way back to San Francisco via a great week in Singapore. Spent the week DJ’ing and taking in 90 degree days capping off with the Big Wig Festival, where I also had the pleasure of backing Masia One (who just got off a SE Asia run with our boy DJ Autograph). As you know Mixtape Mondays never sleeps, and we’ve got another well-rounded edition with badness inna dancehall, blazing roots & culture, and original tropical vibes. Take it all in below.

LargeUp Premiere: Jus Now’s “One Time” Video

Words by Jesse Serwer—

JusNow-OneTimeEP

Occupying a space between power soca, steelpan and the freakiest outer limits of U.K. dance music, “One Time” is the debut single from Jus Now, the Anglo-Trinidadian duo of Interface (of Bristol, England) and LAZAbeam (of T&T). As jarring as the song’s unique sound is the accompanying video, a manic trip through Port of Spain’s streets, roti shops, parrot’s nests and a dojo full of karate kids. We’ve seen some ambitious soca videos this Carnival season, but this is some really next-level business.

Story of A Drum: New Documentary ‘Panomundo’ Shines A Light on the Steelpan

Words by Tasha Brown—

Panomundo

British director Keith Musaman Morton and Trini-American producer Charysse Tia Harper are on a mission to share the story of the steelpan in their new film project, Panomundo. Panomundo (the title is a combination of steelpan and the Spanish word mundo, which translates to world) is set to be showcased in 2013, but the directors have already issued a seven-minute promo video online to give viewers a taste of the film to come.
