Ready For Di Road: Watch Bunji Garlin’s “Differentology” Video

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Bunji Garlin Differentology

The video for Bunji Garlin’s “Differentology” is one of the most anticipated ever from a soca artist. “Differentology” was the breakout tune of Trinidad’s carnival season, a season which has already produced some memorable, high-concept videos that have stepped up the game for soca visuals. Months have passed since Carnival hype died down, but the hype surrounding “Differentology” has only grown. Even The Guardian has taken notice, naming it first in a list of “Essential summer jams for 2013.” Throw in the fact that the video was shot (and publicized) back in the afterglow of carnival in February, and you have the biggest soca story in mont

AUDIO: Jus Now Remix Machel Montano + Kes the Band

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Jus-Now

Jus Now, the international production combo consisting of Bristol, England’s Interface and T&T-based LAZAbeam, are making some of the freshest soca  right now. (They also made one of the coolest videos we’ve seen all year, for the soca-inspired-but not-exactly-soca title track from their One Time EP)  “Differentology” excepted, they’re responsible for a currently scorching Bunji Garlin’s best tracks this year, including the calypso-fueled “Savage” and “Tun Up” off the aforementioned One Time. Bunji Garlin is definitely having a big year. Not only was his “Differentology” the biggest soca tune to come out of this year’s Carnival season, but it’s looking like it might have the legs to become a true international summer hit, both inside and out of the Caribbean. The tune—one of the most seamless blends of soca and EDM to date—was recently remixed by Major Lazer on their Lazer Strikes Back, Vol. 4 EP; Diplo and crew also dropped the track during a climactic moment of their set at the Coachella Festival in California last month.

Spent the week DJ’ing and taking in 90 degree days capping off with the Big Wig Festival, where I also had the pleasure of backing Masia One (who just got off a SE Asia run with our boy DJ Autograph). As you know Mixtape Mondays never sleeps, and we’ve got another well-rounded edition with badness inna dancehall, blazing roots & culture, and original tropical vibes. Take it all in below.

Faluma Records, the Carnival Carnival music-focused German label, has returned with an EP featuring remixes of a pair of recent tunes by Bajan soca legend Anderson Armstrong, better known as Blood. Formerly the lead singer of Barbados’ famed Square One band alongside Alison Hinds, Blood has been one of his country’s top soca producers for years, with several Party Monarch titles to his credit as well.
