Pull Up, Selector!: Stream Busy Signal’s New Single “Come Shock Out”

Words by Sherman Escoffery—

Busy Signal

Less than ten days after being released from prison in the US, dancehall star Busy Signal has returned to Jamaica and asserted his presence with “Come Shock Out,” a real uptempo feelgood song that pays tribute to 80’s sound system deejays, and a time when it was just one turntable playing in the dance. Shouting out his peers and his elders alike, Busy channels the sound of some of dancehall’s greatest rhythm riders from the 80’s, including the late Early B, Lord Sassafrass, Burru Banton, General Trees and even Sancho, as producer Shane Brown plays bits and pieces of Dennis Brown’s “Revolution” bass line—and which Busy Signal rides like a professional disc jockey in the Jamaican sense of the word.

Audio: Stream Busy Signal’s “Reggae Music Again”

Words by Jesse Serwer—

With his frenetic, nimble chatting style and addictive hits like “Tic Toc” and “Da Style Deh,” Busy Signal has held down a steady place at the front of the dancehall pack for most of the last decade. But the versatile deejay has taken a different path with his fourth full-length album. Reggae Music Again, out today through VP Records, sees “Hott Ed” voicing a full LP’s worth of reggae rhythms produced by longtime collaborator Shane Brown.

Bless Up, Mi Dads: Ten Current Caribbean Artists and Their Musical Fathers

Words by Jesse Serwer

RebelSaluteG20091229WS

When you think of kids carrying on their father’s musical legacy, the Marley family is, rightfully, probably the first to come to mind. And if you’re talking about current reggae/dancehall music, you have to acknowledge the McGregor clan, with siblings Stephen, Chino and Shema all carrying on the Big Ship banner begun by their still-active father, Freddie McGregor. With Father’s Day coming up this Sunday, it got us wondering: who are some of the other current Caribbean artists and producers with influential musical fathers behind them? As many “mama” tunes as there are in reggae, dancehall and other genres, tributes to fathers are rare. Here’s 10 names we’re guessing you may know, and 10 reasons why you should also know their fathers–if you’re not up on the connections already.
