Fashion Fridays: Shimmy Shimmy x Shabba Ranks

IceCream

Pixels cross the Atlantic at the speed of light (or at least the speed of dial-up) while physical package tek the slow boat. Which is why even though dancehall-friendly Shimmy Shimmy blog launched itself as a printed zine called No Ice Cream Sound at the end of last year, we didn’t get our oily fingerprints on it til 2011. But this is not a late post on No Ice Cream Sound (don’t get it jumble; NIS is a fine publication featuring our favorite new wave dancehall queen Natalie Storm interviewed by our other favorite new wave dancehall queen Erin Hansen, contributions from LargeUp UK correspondent Gabriel Heatwave plus a top 15 list of artists named ‘Ranks’ that’s right up our gully–and if you’re in New York you should proceed directly to Deadly Dragon and cop yourself one while supplies last). No, this is an early-out post on the recently announced news that the fools behind Shimmy Shimmy will be printing a 2nd run of their limited edition Shabba tee (did we mention this cat is everywhere this year?) a fine addition to the closet of any dancehall nerd. Word is they’ll be available soon at their online shop, so keep hitting refresh so as to cop the second the pixels say, Go. Cause while we applaud NIS/Shimmy for taking a break from the matrix and re-entering three-dimensional space, airmail does take mad long (More pics of the tee after the jump).

No, the other big island. The United Kingdom. Here are some of our personal favorites. Dennis! Come back wit’ me apple pie…

From here on out we are dedicating Thursday afternoons to posting throwback videos from your favorite Caribbean artists on LargeUp, on the basis THAT’S WHAT WE REALLY DO ON A THURSDAY AFTERNOON ANYWAY–which means it’s probably what you do, too. We are touching off in style with Shabba Ranks, who as we’ve noted has been resurfacing everywhere this past year from the cover of FADER magazine to “Red Dot Special” to Irish & Chin’s “Reewind” event. Also, just in the past few weeks Daddy Bigg$ of Platinum Camp productions worked out a deal to start releasing back-catalog material from legendary Brooklyn label/record store Super Power on iTunes–including not only a trailor load of the 45s and albums that buss Shabba, but seminal tunes from Super Cat, Louie Rankin and a who’s who of other old-time deejays. Watch this space for more vids, news and features on your favorite Big People Music and feel free to drop requests in the comments section or hit us twitter. Come again.

Watch Me Now: Ranks & Grotesk

Words by Eddie STATS Houghton

buju

Seems like everybody is getting inspired by the look and sound of classic dancehall these days and as any graphic designer knows the purest form of flattery is to slap your inspiration onto a t-shirt. The very same day this FADER post put us up on the new UK-based line of tees called Ranks–as the name suggest it seems to be a series of tributes to top-ranking old-school deejays like Buju (above) Shabba (after the jump) and Ninjaman–we also lucked up on these recent beauties from NY-based Swiss designer Grotesk, which deftly illustrate more slippery abstract concepts like “Super-Clash” and “Soundboy Burial.” If there’s any justice in the dancehall universe, the next Ranks tribute will feature a portrait of Supercat and the next Grotesk edition will visualize the metaphysical aspects of “Cabin Stabbin’” with some lincoln logs and a dagger.

Spragga Benz and Friends: “Red Dot Special” x “More Life”

Words By Jesse Serwer

We’ve been telling you about Spragga Benz’s upcoming Shotta Culture for a minute; now the LP, Spragga’s first since 2000′s Fully Loaded, has a release date attached to it: Aug. 31. You had to figure with rap/reggae hybrid master Salaam Remi overseeing things that Shotta would have a heavy hip-hop influence, and the latest leaks from the album bear this out. Teased online for a minute ow, the epic (5:43), star-powered (Sizzla, Stephen Marley, Jah Cure and Queen Ifrica) “More Life” recently hit our inbox in full. While the Salaam-produced track has some classic dancehall vibes to it, it also has that New York bounce. In fact, it’s just the sort of rhythm that Nas and Damian should would have done well to seek out more of for their recent Distant Relatives project.
