Spragga Benz x Salaam Remi’s “Shotta Culture” Album Release Party

Words by DJ Gravy::: Pics by Tono Radvany

You may have caught some of  the “Shotta Culture” music videos (and some behind the scenes footage) we at Largeup posted over the the last few months. And this past Tuesday, August 31st, dancehall icon, Spragga Benz, and Grammy winning producer, Salaam Remi, got some friends together to celebrate the release of their new concept album, “Shotta Culture” at Santos Party House.

Music videos off the record were played on a giant screen and  I (DJ Gravy) was there to play some tunes alongside Federation’s Max Glazer and Kenny Meez. Largeup’s Tono Radvany caught some pics that captured the vibe of the evening, enjoy.

Words by DJ Gravy

DubShot Records is a NYC-based digital label and music service primarily servicing “left of center reggae, dancehall and new school dub” in the words of founder Chris Schlarb. His lengthy tenure at VP Records and Ryko coupled with a great appetite for Caribbean music built him a great network and working with Sean Paul’s Road Manager, Steve Wilson, he eventually began promoting projects from Transdub Massiv, Rootz Underground, Jovi Rockwell and more. As his brainchild, DubShot Records was founded to promote artist from the Caribbean diaspora as well as those inspired by it.

Demarco “Shows” Commercial Strength

Words by DJ Theory

demarco

Demarco’s new video “Show It” (ft Craig from Voicemail) has broken through the tough outer skin of commercial Hip Hop/R&B (and god forbid reggae) in the states courtesy of its recent debut on 106 & Park on BET. As you may know, 106 & Park is one of the most influential platforms for any artist to appear on, and rarely is a reggae/dancehall artist featured (one “reggae” artist who’s videos air on the show regularly would be Sean Kingston, but that’s mostly due to his relentlessly commercial appeal, teenage fan base, and bubble gum pop lyrics).  As the official video (watch it after the jump) demonstrates, “Show It” is a definite club-banger poised for commercial success, and it goes without saying that Demarco and Craig would have no reservations about seeing some of that mainstream $$ find it’s way into their pockets…

Toppa Top 10: Dancehall Cameos

words by Eddie STATS Houghton

Photobucket

Just a little something to start some Friday afternoon office arguments (stop, we know you’re not actually working). The main criteria of inclusion on this top 10 is that the dancehall artist must be guesting for an artist–or parachuting into a situation–that is not in any way recognizable as reggae. For instance, “The Jam” and the infamous “Dolly My Baby” remix are disqualified because rap artists are guesting on the Jamaican artist’s record. The Fugees, Heavy D and Busta Rhymes are practically reggae artists themselves so those collabos are out. Samples and remixes don’t count either (sorry, MIMS) but i like your thinking. For more in that vein check Jesse Serwer’s NYC Badmen list and read on:
