Dutty Duet: Melanie Fiona x Sean Paul, “4AM (Remix)”

Words By Nico Simino

With her much delayed sophomore release, The MF Life, now set to drop in May, Guyanese-Canadian songstress Melanie Fiona’s “4 am” single has found itself remixed into a much more club-friendly song featuring fellow Caribbean, Sean Paul. The original “4 am” is a slower, more hypnotizing ballad, featuring a cheating lover with poor Melanie at home waiting (we all know, he must be crazy). The remix draws on heavy house and dancehall influences, with Sean Paul offering a rebellious, but reassuring, response to Melanie’s song. Listen, and download below.

Toppa Top 10: Ten Dancehall Songs To Ram A Desi Dancefloor

Words by DJ Rekha

DJ Rekha is the woman responsible for popularizing the South Asian diasporic sound called bhangra in the US, holding down the famed Basement Bhangra party at New York’s SOBs for going on a decade and a half. Dancehall, always a crowd pleaser at Indian parties and an influence for many a bhangra artist and producer, is a big part of her sets, whether she’s warming up for Punjabi rappers or spinning at Lincoln Center. Here, she breaks down the 10 biggest dancehall songs at Desi parties, from ’90s classics like “Heads High” and “Murder She Wrote” to more recent fare like “Dance with You” featuring British-Indian superstar Jay Sean. And, if you’re in New York this Friday, be sure to check her Bhangra + Bass event (A Dancehall and Punjabi Soundclash!) featuring the US debut of Pakistani-Canadian dancehall artist Roach Killa, and our own Eddie STATS on the decks.

Dutty Producer: Watch Sean Paul’s Epic, 10-Minute Material Riddim Video

Words by Emily Shapiro, via The Fader

Sean Paul’s career already boasts four hit albums and a Grammy but now he is adding hit-making producer to his resume. Material Riddim, Dutty Paul’s second venture into production, is one of the year’s standout riddims, voiced by major artists (Spragga Benz, Wayne Marshall), up-and-coming acts (Chi Ching Ching, Nicky B) and a few folks you may not have heard in a while (Voicemail, Hollow Point). The hype tunes like “Roll Wid Di Don” by Mr. Paul himself and “Ride” by Tami Chynn are all featured in an epic, 10-minute-plus video mix recently filmed in Kingston. In addition to bringing together some huge dancehall talents, the video, directed by Mykal Cushine and choreographed by Tanisha Scott, is a visual treat, with some dope graphics, animation and performance.

Remember Him: Concert to Honor the Late Joel Chin

Words by Emily Shapiro

VP Records and DJ Norie will host a tribute concert for Joel Chin, the label’s late director of A&R, at BB King’s in New York City on Dec. 14. The “Strictly the Best” event, which is also celebrating the release of the 44th and 45th volumes of the reggae compilation series, will feature performances from Sean Paul, Shaggy, Gyptian, Wayne Marshall and Demarco (whose performance of “Fallen Soldiers” should inevitably be emotional), among others.
