Toppa Top 8: Don Corleon Selects His Favorite Dub Records + Exclusive Interview

Words by Jesse Serwer

don-corleon

Donovan “Don Corleon” Bennett’s Dub in HD, out today on iTunes, Amazon and other online music retailers, is the first dub album by a major Jamaican producer that we’ve heard of in years. Corleon, the producer behind some of the largest riddims of the last decade, told us the project is meant not as a money-making proposition but specifically to expose the next generation of reggae/dancehall fans and producers to the sound and technique. We quizzed Corleon about the project, but–this being Toppa Top 10 Tuesdays and all—first we asked him to break down some of his all-time favorite dub LPs.

Toppa Top 10: Spooky Reggae!

Words by Eddie STATS Houghton

scientist_rids_the_world_of_the_evil_curse_of_the_vampires-lp

This year Halloween fell on a weekend (sorry, it had to be said) and Subatomic Sound and J. Rockaz have inspired me to compile this top 10 list of spooky reggae jams to drop between “Thriller” and Fela’s “Zombie” at your haunted houseparty. Anything related to duppies, ghosts, vampires, zombies and other undead creatures is fair game and the truly scary thing is how many classic reggae tunes there are that fall into this ghoulish category once you start um, digging. Maybe there are heaps of spooky soca and merengue jams I just don’t know about but it certainly seems like the supernatural is a recurring theme in Kingston, a town that has produced crews called Monster Shack and Scare Dem–not to mention Ghost! Whatever the reason, there are way more than 10 so let’s get started. Grab that flashlight and follow me, kids!

Visual Culture: Stussy x Jamaica

Words by Eddie STATS Houghton

Stussy-x-Greensleeves-2

If you hang out with the cool kids you may have already heard about the new Greensleeves First 100 Covers book from Stussy and the T-Shirt line it inspired, both featuring classic images of Yellowman, Scientist, Eek-A-Mouse and other Jamaican giants. But you may or not know that Stussy was the original, original brand to merge streetwear fashion tropes with reggaematical inspiration going all the way back to their Jah Lion tee in 1980. That being the case, it seemed only appropriate that in addition to supporting the current project we go a mile or two deeper and talk to the bosses at Stussy about the history of the brand and it’s long-distance Jamaican love affair. Check the book and accompanying mixtape, enjoy these visual gems–but more importantly, look for the exclusive interview in the next week or two!
