Video: Romain Virgo Gets “Fired Up Inside”

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Romain Virgo

We weren’t always fully on board with Romain Virgo but then the young crooner came and dropped one of the best reggae LPs of the year, The System (No. 6 on LargeUp’s Toppa Top 10 albums of 2012). Now, we’re almost ready to start calling him the next Sanchez, especially if he keeps making tunes like “Fired Up Inside,” one of the clear-cut highlights from The System.

Philadelphia International: Sanchez Covers Teddy Pendergrass’ “Love TKO”

Words by Jesse Serwer

Talk of late has been all about Otis, but dancehall don Sanchez has a different soul icon he wants to bring to your attention right now: the late Teddy Pendergrass. Sanchez’s lovers rock rendition of Teddy’s signature “Love TKO” is the first single from his upcoming Love You More LP, out on VP Records tomorrow, and it isn’t even the only cover of a song by Pendergrass, who passed away last January at age 59, on the album. In addition to a rendition of Teddy’s post-paralyzation comeback tune, “In My Time,” the (almost) all-soul covers LP sees Jamaica’s karaoke king tackle the Isley Brothers (“Caravan of Love,”), The Spinners (“How Could I Let You Get Away”), LTD (“Shine On”) and, umm, ’80′s mullet-rocker Richard Marx (“Right Here Waiting”). Now, in anyone else’s hands a reggae Richard Marx cover would be better left unmentioned but all we’re saying is reserve your judgment ’cause this is the guy who turned a better-left-forgotten mid-80′s Jermaine Jackson single into one of the most essential tunes in any Golden Era dancehall set.

Easy Star: New Serani “My Star” Video on Dancehall Again

Words by Eddie STATS Houghton

Mystar2

Following up on the breakout success of “No Games” Serani is back on a 90s throwback thing, reanimating not only the dancehall vibes of the Pepperseed era with the Daseca-built Dancehall Again riddim (I premiered it here) but also the melodic vibes of your sweet 16 slow-dance. The title seems like a nod to classic ladies’ tunes by Wayne Wonder (“Movie Star”) and Professor Grizzly (“Shining Star”) and more importantly the song itself is worthy of such comparisons on every level. The video is pretty straightforward but well-shot and shall we say, well-proportioned (in the coca-cola bottle sense). Badmen, watch and tek note after the jump. Awo! Yuh learn.
