Puff Puff Chune: Watch Vybz Kartel’s New Video for “Weed Smokers”

Words by Emily Shapiro—

The World Boss, Vybz Kartel has dropped a new video for his song “Weed Smokers,” and like the title and Vybz himself, there is nothing subtle about it. The video starts with a cameo from RVSSIAN (formerly Russian), one of the maddest producers in the game whose name is on this track, and continues with short clips of girls, parties and lots and lots of weed smoking. The chune is nice and the video has a very definitive message. Check it out below:

LargeUp Premiere: Vybz Kartel and Russian Have “The Cure Fi Badmind”

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Vybz Kartel and Russian, "The Cure Fi Badmind"

Badmind is the worsest disease, according to Vybz Kartel and Russian, and who cures diseases? Doctors! Hence the cover art for Kartel and producer/artist Russian’s new single “The Cure Fi Badmind,” which depicts both men in hospital scrubs and surgical masks, ready to operate on what they say out-ranks AIDS, diabetes, herpes and syphilis as Jamaica’s greatest ill. (For our less yard-savvt readers, “badmind” basically translates to “hating,” specifically on someone more successful than you).

Audio: Stream Konshens’ New Single “Liad” (Prod. by Russian)

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Just the other day we brought you Russian’s new Dynamite riddim—featuring the title track from Vybz Kartel, plus tunes from Elephant Man, Aidonia and more—in full, or so we thought. Turns out the producer had more in store for us: specifically a new single with dancehall-artist-of-the-moment Konshens, called “Liad,” and it’s a tune. Going out on a limb here, but this is not only the best tune on the riddim but one of the best tunes we’ve heard from Konshens.  “Liad” drops on iTunes this Tuesday but stream it here in advance.

Audio: Russian x Vybz Kartel = “Dynamite”

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Our friend Russian just sent us over his new Dynamite riddim featuring a brand-new single (also called “Dynamite”) from Vybz Kartel. Russian made his breakthrough with his production on “Straight Jeans and Fitted” for Kartel, and they’ve worked quite a bit together since then, so it’s no surprise that Russian would have some stored-up Kartel in the vaults. Other artists on Dynamite, a dancehall nod to Blackstreet’s “No Diggity,” are Aidonia, Elephant Man, Chan Dizzy, Charly Blacks and newcomers Eleigh, Fyah Bass and Jamiel. Stream all those songs below; it’s also selling now on iTunes.

Video Premiere: Area 51 Riddim Medley + Munga “We So Bad”

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Named for the “top-secret” (yet world famous) government strip in Nevada slash hotbed of unidentified flying objects, Area 51 is a new riddim from Russian and Consi of Head Concussion Records voiced by Chan Dizzy, Supa Hype, Munga, Gyptian and Chi Ching Ching. The latter four recently took to the streets and clubs of Kingston with video director Biggz D Boss for a medley video, with Munga’s “We So Bad” also getting the full-length video treatment. (Speaking of Mr. “Bad From Mi Born,” check out his new Slap Weh mixtape with DJ Kitt on last week’s Mixtape Mondays) Watch both clips below, and look out for more from Russian and Head Concussion over here real soon.

LargeUp Premiere: Tommy Lee X Russian, “Lyrical Bomber”

Words by Jesse Serwer—

If you’ve been following dancehall in the last few months, you’ve surely heard the name Tommy Lee come up with increasing frequency. Not to be confused with the rock deity of the same name, the Montego Bay, Jamaica, native with the highly unusual voice has been carrying the torch for Gaza alongside Popcaan in Vybz Kartel’s absence. Producer Russian and his Head Concussion Records recently voiced Mr. Lee for a tune called “Lyrical Bomber,” and they’ve given us the track to premiere. It’s a scorcher, so we’re glad to bring it to you. As our good friend Ms. Raine noted in regard to Tommy’s “Psycho” video, the deejay has that unhinged, psychopath thing going on—think Ninjaman meets ODB, or Eminem on his horrorcore vibes. That quality is on full display in ”Lyrical Bomber,” as Tommy casually shifts from a cool, restrained vocal style to something much more sinister and creepy.
