Fashion Fridays: Alpha Boys School, the Birthplace of Ska, Gets Its Own T-Shirts

Words by Jesse Serwer, Photos by Martei Korley—

Alpha Boys School Ska

The Alpha Boys School in Kingston, Jamaica is generally acknowledged as the birthplace of ska music. The four original members of the Skatalites—Tommy McCook, Johnny “Dizzy” Moore, Lester Sterling and Don Drummond—got their start in the Alpha Boys band, as did other figures in the music’s development, including Rico Rodriguez. Other notable alumni who have passed through Alpha’s doors include Leroy “Horsemouth” Wallace, Yellowman and Leroy Smart. Today, the school, run by Sister Susan Frazer, continues to be an oasis for troubled boys in Jamaica, and an incubator for musicians. Its famed music program was even featured in a key scene in the recent Snoop Lion documentary Reincarnated.

Regatta de Lazer: Major Lazer Caribbean Tour Video + “Jessica” Audio

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Major Lazer

In January, Major Lazer set sail—that’s not flowery language, they literally set sail—on a five-stop Caribbean tour, traveling from Jamaica to Tortola to St. Maarten to St. Croix to Puerto Rico aboard a boat called the Molly Roger. Naturally, they documented the highlights (plus Diplo ironing and a cameo from Pootie Tang) in a video, which has been set to “Jah No Partial,” the Johnny Osbourne-featuring second single from their upcoming and once-again postponed sophomore album, Free the Universe.

Vintage Jamericana: Watch Christopher Ellis’ “Don’t Change Your Number” Video

Words by Jesse Serwer–

christopher ellis don't change your number

I don’t know about you but when I think of vintage, way-back-in-the-day Jamaica, an Alton Ellis tune is always what’s playing in the vision. Alton just had that voice that takes you back, even if you were never there. It’s only fitting that Ellis’ singer son, Christopher Ellis (though he doesn’t particularly sound like his old man) would take a page from his pops, bringing a classic feel to his music when the riddim calls for it.
