Mrs. Bogle: Rihanna Willie Bounces, Licks Off a Shot Fi Adele

Words by Jesse Serwer, via Mr. World Premiere

Shockingly, Rihanna’s performance at last night’s Grammys was one of the evening’s least shocking numbers. (For that honor, we’re torn between Nicki Minaj’s quasi-Satanic levitation act, or the Don Cornelius “tribute” that turned into the re-anointment of Chris Brown). The yardie/dancehall contingent’s eyebrows were surely raised, though, as Ri-Ri put a little Willie Bounce in her step, breaking into the famed dancehall dance pioneered by the late Mr. Wacky, aka Mr. Bogle, and celebrated in the Elephant Man song of the same name, during her performance of “We Found Love”:

The Songsmith Steps Out: Download Stacy Barthe’s “No Strings Attached”

Words by Emily Shapiro—

You may not yet know the name Stacy Barthe but this singer/songwiter from Brooklyn has been behind many of our favorite tunes for quite a few years. Barthe, who has both Haitian and Dominican roots, first hit mainstream success when she wrote “Blur” on Britney Spears’ Circus album and since then she has penned tracks for a ton of hit-making artists, including Katy Perry (“Hummingbird Heartbeat”), Kelly Rowland (“Everywhere You Go”) and Rihanna (“Cheers (Drink to That),” which reached #7 on the Billboard charts). Now, she is using her way with words to develop a new artist—herself.

Mixtape Mondays: Tons Of Nada, Safari Sound, DJ Robbie x Bob Marley

Words by DJ Theory—

I’m gonna leave the Super Bowl business alone today (not just because I’m from New England…) because we have much more relevant matters at hand over here—mainly Mixtape Mondays and a birthday celebration for someone you and I both know and love. So let’s forget about LMFAO’s guest appearance at halftime last night and move right into some quality mixes from Brazil, Sweden and even Oklahoma. See, I’m starting to forget about the game already…

Now Things: A Q+A with Watch the Throne Producer Sham “Sak Pase” Joseph

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Haitian-American producer Shama (Sham) Joseph first landed on our radar with his production for Rihanna’s “Man Down.” The reggae-flavored hit (now officially a touchstone) brought RiRi back to her Caribbean roots but also grabbed our attention with the opening tag, “Sak Pase!”— “What’s happening” in Kreyòl. Building on the momentum of “Man Down,” Sham placed “Who Gon Stop Me” and “Made it in America,” two of the best tracks on Kanye West and Jay-Z’s blockbuster Watch the Throne album. Apparently, he was just getting warmed up, though, as a partial list of the artists he’s working with currently reads like a list of hip-hop, R&B and dancehall’s biggest hitmakers of the last 10 years: Sean Paul, T.I., Keyshia Cole, Usher, Ciara, Busta Rhymes, Chris Brown, Mavado. So whether you’ve got Haitian friends or not, get used to hearing “Sak Pase!” a whole hell of a lot. We recently spoke with the Fort Lauderdale, Florida native over the phone from his current homebase in Atlanta.

Three Men Down: Cris Cab, Wyclef + Mavado Hit by “Rihanna’s Gun”

Words by Jesse Serwer—

We’ve been hearing about Miami’s Cris Cab for a minute but, after hearing “Rihanna’s Gun,” we get the sense we completely had him twisted. While there’s a definite Wyclef (specifically Wyclef channeling Bob Marley) vibe to his single “Good Girls,” we had him mostly pegged as a Starbucks-y John Mayer type. But “Rihanna’s Gun” (produced by ‘Clef and his brother, Sedeck Jean) is some badman business, with young Cris (seriously, we’re not sure he’s even graduated high school) holding his own next to the MFin’ Gully Gad, Mavado, as he responds to Rihanna’s “Man Down.” As much as this song is about being humbled and wounded, CC turns the phrase “Rikers Island” like a hardened shotta. Count us officially intrigued by the possibilitie of his Echo Boom mixtape, featuring production from Pharrell and Supa Dups among others, out next Wednesday. Stream and DL “Rihanna’s Gun” below.
