Lift Off: Stream Cris Cab x Wyclef’s “She’s So Fly”

Words by Emily Shapiro—

The PUSH Artist of the Week, MTV’s initiative to highlight and support new talent in the music industry, recently put its spotlight on Cris Cab, but Large Up has been following the 19-year-old Miami artist for a while now. While Cab’s voice has an emo quality to it, his songs often have a pop reggae vibe not unlike that of his mentor and collaborator, Wyclef. Earlier this year, the pair collaborated on “Rihanna’s Gun,” a smooth response to “Man Down” also featuring Mavado that got our attention definitely took Cab out of any box we might have placed him in.

LargeUp Premiere: So Shifty Remix I-Octane’s “We Love The Vibes” (+ Bonus Rihanna Remix)

Words by DJ Theory—

German bad boys So Shifty are back with more heat, this time touching on some tropical moombahton territory for the club/pool (or both, if you’re lucky). They’ve been casually reworking tunes from the likes of Major Lazer, Busy, Kartel, TOK, U-Roy, The Very Best, the yours truly-produced single with Jahdan Blakkamoore and too many more, and for this they flip I-Octane‘s big summertime dancehall tune “We Love The Vibes” in a whole new direction yet again. With Toddla T and Young Lion already running it on their BBC Radio 1 programs, this moombahton/dancehall crossover should start catching on very soon and no doubt become a summer favorite, in a similar vein to the Major Lazer “Party Shot” remix. Download the ting below, IT SICK!

If you don’t already know Jae Blaze, it’s definitely time to get familiar. This super innovative Toronto-based choreographer has worked with everyone from Rihanna to The Black Eyed Peas to Nicki Minaj. She’s also put in work spreading dancehall style to the broader dance community and to the mainstream, having choreographed a routine to Mavado’s “Star Bwoy” on Canada’s So You Think You Can Dance, among other things.

Swamp Ting: Watch Rihanna’s Video for “Where Have You Been”

Words by Emily Shapiro–

Over the years, Rihanna has done a stellar job of repping her Bajan roots while maintaining her worldwide pop appeal. All of her albums have at least one Caribbean-inspired song, and this year she took things to another level by busting some popular dancehall party dances during her Grammy performance of “We Found Love.” #Williebounce was trending on Twitter almost immediately after the show, one of the few moments where dancehall has crept over into mainstream consciousness recently.

Hi, Rihanna: Federation Sound’s All-Dubplate Rihanna Birthday Mix

Words by Jesse Serwer, via Federation Sound

As you may know, our dude Max Glazer and Rihanna go way back. The Federation Sound boss man was Ms. Fenty’s original DJ, playing an instrumental role in the pop superstar’s early career, and still turns up as a DJ at her private parties. For her 24th birthday today, Mr. Glazer gave his old buddy a nice tribute by compiling an all-dubplate mix in her honor featuring pretty much every current dancehall star of note toasting to the Bajan princess’ B-day over their biggest recent hits. Popcaan’s “Ravin” and “Party Shot,” Beenie Man and Future Fambo’s “Rum and Red Bull,” Mavado’s “So Special,” Serani’s “No Games,” Vegas’ “I Am Blessed” and more all get Rihanna x 24 re-licks from the artists themselves. Stream the mix below, and download it here.
