Roots, Rockstars, Reggae: Bob Marley Tribute at the Grammys

Words by Emily Shapiro

2013 Grammy Awards

Last week, Beyonce repped hard for Caribbean music when she hit the stage at the Super Bowl so we were hyped to hear that the Grammys would be following suit with a tribute to the one and only Bob Marley, who would have turned 68 last week (Here’s how we celebrated it). While we were thinking that reggae is having a serious and well-deserved moment in popular culture, the tribute featuring Bruno Mars, Sting, Rihanna, Ziggy and Damian Marley fell a little short of expectations.

LargeUp Premiere: Jr. Blender Remixes Rihanna’s “Diamonds”

Words by DJ Theory—

Hamburg, Germany producer Jr. Blender (of So Shifty and Supersonic Sound fame) strikes again, this time putting in work on two Rihanna tunes. Honestly this dude could remix every one of Rihanna’s tunes for the span of her career and I wouldn’t be the least bit mad… He was kind enough to drop these new versions off for us to share with you—one a sparkling reggae verion of her current anthem “Diamonds“, the other a one drop drum edit for the DJs of the already reggae-inspired “No Love Allowed.” Rihanna’s voice and Bajan background naturally lean towards reggae, and it seems to work particularly well in the capable hands of Jr. Blender (let’s not forget his flawless rendition of “Where Have You Been“). DJs and Rihanna fans need to get with both of these pronto. Stream and download below—for more downloads, pass thru Blenders personal stash here.

Bad Gyal Blues: Rihanna Pon The Reggae Tip

Rihanna GQ outtake

Rihanna is the bad girl everyone loves to hate, and hates to love. Regardless of how you feel about her, her album, Unapologetic, which dropped on November 19, has everybody talking. (And if it doesn’t, the topless outtakes from her new GQ cover—see above—probably does).
