Audio: Walshy Fire + So Shifty Remix “Bruk It Down”

Words by Tasha Brown—

Just when you thought Mr. Vegas’ “Bruk It Down” couldn’t be mixed anymore, Walshy Fire and So Shifty have put a fresh spin on Vegas’ year-old-yet-still-going dancehall hit over the holidays. Walshy and So Shifty are no strangers to dancehall remixes, but the Jamaican born, Miami-based selector/mic man and the German production duo took this one—actually, there’s two, slightly different remixes—in a surprising direction that recalls Brazilian baile funk and Baltimore club, and is driven by the twangy sound of a jew’s harp. When two (well, three) dancehall gurus merge on an already-banging Mr. Vegas track, this is what it sounds like:

LargeUp Premiere: Jr. Blender Remixes Rihanna’s “Diamonds”

Words by DJ Theory—

Hamburg, Germany producer Jr. Blender (of So Shifty and Supersonic Sound fame) strikes again, this time putting in work on two Rihanna tunes. Honestly this dude could remix every one of Rihanna’s tunes for the span of her career and I wouldn’t be the least bit mad… He was kind enough to drop these new versions off for us to share with you—one a sparkling reggae verion of her current anthem “Diamonds“, the other a one drop drum edit for the DJs of the already reggae-inspired “No Love Allowed.” Rihanna’s voice and Bajan background naturally lean towards reggae, and it seems to work particularly well in the capable hands of Jr. Blender (let’s not forget his flawless rendition of “Where Have You Been“). DJs and Rihanna fans need to get with both of these pronto. Stream and download below—for more downloads, pass thru Blenders personal stash here.

Audio: The Heatwave Bring “Pum Pum Bax”

Words by DJ Theory—

Whoa gosh.. another dancefloor destroyer here courtesy of our folks across the lake at The Heatwave headquarters. For this concoction they blend x-rated vocals from Tommy Lee, Busy Signal and Natalie Storm with the infectious 2-step tune “Bax” from London killa Mosca, and it results in a clever crossover refix that’s a UK deejay’s wet dream.. Couldn’t help but recall our girl The Large‘s version as well, which also knocks. Stream Pum Pum Bax below or cop the free download here. Nice one!

Audio: Cutty Ranks “Blood Stain” (Kush Arora remix) LargeUp Exclusive

Words by DJ Theory—

Boom bahng! Big new Cutty Ranks remix from our dude Kush Arora, the man responsible for such LargeUp remix favorites as this gem. The original gunman Cutty took a new approach with his last full length Full Blast, swapping out the slackness and dancehall which he practically helped invent for a bag of mostly one drop and culture. With features from Luciano and Beres Hammond, the record delivered a quality listen for reggae fans and helped keep a 20+ year veteran relevant today. Kush now moved his conscious roots tune “Blood Stain” into tomorrowplacing his signature “dread bass” touch all over it and letting things take a deep breath so Cutty’s lyrics could shine. Stay thru the outro for full effect and tell me you couldn’t hear a dozen deejays who would murder this riddim.

Bad Gyal Blues: Rihanna Pon The Reggae Tip

Words by Tasha Brown—

Rihanna GQ outtake

Rihanna is the bad girl everyone loves to hate, and hates to love. Regardless of how you feel about her, her album, Unapologetic, which dropped on November 19, has everybody talking. (And if it doesn’t, the topless outtakes from her new GQ cover—see above—probably does).
