Throwback Thursdays: Jasmine Solano on Shabba Ranks’ “Love Punany Bad”

Words by Jasmine Solano—

Love Punany Bad

It’s been a few weeks since we’ve indulged in our usual Throwback Thursdays routine. Tomorrow night, Feb. 1, sees the return of LargeUp friends Jasmine Solano and Melo-X‘s long-running and much-loved NYC-based party, Electric Punanny, so had Jasmine weigh in on a certain punanny-loving classic from Shabba Ranks that’s sure to get rinsed on Friday night.

Punanny Vision: Four Years of NYC’s Electric Punanny Party

Words by LargeUp Crew, Photo by Brock Fetch, Video by Vinny & Tone—

After a brief hiatus, Jasmine Solano and Melo-X‘s Electric Punanny returns on Sat. Aug 4, at The Loft/Public Assembly in Brooklyn, with guest selectors Max Glazer, Jillionaire and Smutlee—and a fresh, Limonious-inspired flyer. The event also marks the fourth anniversary of the eclectic, dancehall-meets-Downtown party, and Jasmine, Melo and visual collaborators Vinny and TONE have given us the fly new video they’ve put together to celebrate that milestone. If you haven’t yet had your first taste of Electric Punanny, you’re definitely gonna want some after watching this clip, which captures the party in all its raunchy, colorful splendor. (Wicked soundtrack, too, in Schlacthofbronx’s “Touch Your Toes,” featuring vocals from our own Punanny-ologist Natalie Storm). Lock down that Punanny access for Saturday night with advance tickets here.

Audio: Natalie Storm x Poirier = “Gal U Good”

Words by Jesse Serwer—

After some much-needed time off, our very own punanyologist Natalie Storm is back on her grind again. Fresh off her recent write-up in the U.K. Guardian (courtesy of our own U.K. contributor Marvin Sparks), not to mention her turn on Dre Skull’s Loudspeaker riddim—and even a new Punany Monologue—she’s got a feature on producer Poirier‘s Alert Riddim (on Germany’s Man Recordings) called “Gal U Good.” If you follow Natalie’s moves, you know she doesn’t make dancehall, she makes electrofied garrison dancehall, and you could probably describe Alert the same way. Definitely a scorcher. Stream it below, get the full riddim (also featuring voicings from Face-T and MC Zulu) here and, as ever, stay tuned for more Natalie Storm on LargeUp.

Pum Pum to Di World: Natalie Storm Talks ‘Punany Monologues’

Words by Jesse Serwer, via MTV Iggy

Natalie Storm has kept a low profile this year but our Punany Monologues columnist recently sat down with MTV Iggy and gave her first interview in some time. Among other topics, writer Beverly Bryan asked her about her punanilogue hustle. Here’s what she had to say:

The Punany Monologues Part 5: Natalie Storm Talks About Sex

Words by Natalie Storm, photos by Martei Korley.

Many of you may be offended by this post so this is a disclaimer: the views expressed on this blog are not necessarily the views of the author. I’m speaking nothing but the truth according to my VAGINA (and you know she forced me to write this out of fear. It’s called fluffnaniphobia–the fear of other women with really fat pum-pum). When I was growing up I was extremely thin and my neighbors (hated their guts), even friends and family (really just a bunch of mean people I have to love…haha), used to style me as koo-koom-koom—meaning they heard my bones rubbing together at the joints when I walked. I used to hate it. I wanted nothing more than to be round and fluffy and I even used to pray that God would send me a fairy godmother to turn me into a meatier version of myself, or to at least bring some lubricant for my joints. I’m glad that God saw fit not to answer my prayers because I’d probably be calling myself Natalie “Fluffy to di world, anuh my fault, goodas gal” Storm right now and seeing how I’m already calling myself Natalie “anuh my fault, goodas gal to di world” Storm, I think the fluffy would make it a tad bit too much.
