Clash in Overtime: Stream Cham’s “Lawless” + “Portmore Anthem”

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Cham Lawless Artwork

Last month, Cham voiced JA Productions’ (very Dave Kelly-esque) Overtime riddim and pretty much knocked it out of the park, shouting out Jamaica’s most lawless quarters, from Tivoli to Standpipe to Gully to Flankers. The song was so hot, apparently, that Cham has revisited the riddim again for “Portmore Anthem.” This time he takes a more focused approach, voicing lyrics that at times recall his last truly great tune, “Ghetto Story.” Stream both tracks below, and tell us in the comments which version wins.

Gaza City Revue: Watch Vybz Kartel’s “My Crew” Video

Words by Jesse Serwer—

gaza-city-portmore-vybz-kartel

Vybz Kartel’s absence has forced video directors to get creative, as Kartel’s continued popularity, in spite of his incarceration on two separate murder charges, necessitates promotion of the massive amount of material the Werl’ Boss left in his wake. The latest example is “My Crew,” from Kartel’s Kingston Story LP, re-issued today in physical form by Vice Records after a phyical-only 2011 release through Mixpak Records. The video spotlights the breadth of Kartel-themed graffiti in the area of Portmore known as Gaza City, as well as the area’s youth, from likkle pickneys jumping over a gully to bandana-clad young men pouring liquor down from rooftops. Watch below.

Audio: Jamaican MC Saydis Deserves a “Round of Applause”

Words By Nico Simino—

It would seem that Jamaica-based hip-hop artists are on the rise—we’ve covered at least two in the past month. The newest on the scene is MC Saydis, the self-described “Jamaican rapper who wants to be an American legend.” His newest tune “Round of Applause” is definitely one of the better dancehall/hip-hop hybrids from the islands in a while, boasting some straightforward raps over a Bob Marley Max Romeo-sampling “Chipmunk soul”-style beat.
