Hot This Year: Watch Popcaan’s “Only Man She Want” Video + Stream “Get Gyal Easy”

Words by Emily Shapiro—

In 2011, Portmore native Popcaan went from Vybz Kartel sidekick on “Clarks” to dancehall superstar. He released hits like “Raving” and “Clean” and now in the first week of 2012, he is showing us that he has no intention of slowing down. He’s just released the official video for “Only Man She Wants” and hit us with “Get Gyal Easy,” his latest single. His first tune produced by Kingston Story producer Dre Skull, “Get Gyal Easy” is a chilled out song in which Popcaan shows off his true vocal talent. The new video, meanwhile, is a fairly literal translation of the lyrics to “Only Man She Wants,” in which Popcaan is the object of affection of a very voluptuous woman with a very jealous boyfriend. It appears that the woman, clad only in a corsette and panties, has shown Popcaan her undying love by lending him a gold leopard cardigan, which he models throughout the video. After you check the video below, stream “Gyal Get Easy” and get it on iTunes here.

Fashion Fridays: Ma’ting x Popcaan

Words by Erin Hansen

European and Jamaican creative unions seem to be a recurring theme these days. In the latest example, Swiss culture brand Ma’ting has drawn the affections of dancehall’s Portmore Empire with a line of caricatured Gaza tees. Last year’s iconic Clarks shoe/anthem, a flaming “hot skull” tribute to Popcaan and eerie Mickey Mouse hands flashing the Gaza sign are just a few of the designs the label has printed for their dancehall digs. Now, with the unveiling of a Don Corleon Records line of tees and an endorsement from artistes Protoje and Pressure, Ma’Ting may be on everyting before you know it.

To The World: CNN Discovers Dancehall

Words by Eddie STATS Houghton

CNN_Skerrit

Not long ago we put you up on the Vybz & Popcaan-inspired dance routine on Canada’s answer to So You Think You Can Dance. Well come to find out, we weren’t the only ones watching because CNN just aired this piece interviewing the segment’s choreographer Jae Blaze and LARGE UP homey-for-life Skerrit Bwoy. What’s the breaking news: dancehall runs things! Seriously though, by choosing wisely who they put on camera CNN ended up with a surprisingly intelligent breakdown of dancehall’s explosion in the the digital space and its profound influence on mainstream music. Also there is nary a mention of gunshots, gay-bashing or daggering-related injuries. Its kind of like every 6 months to a year the mainstream media decides to totally reverse its take on whatever subject they’ve been covering. Anyway, we’ll take it…dancehall, 2011 is your year!

Toppa Top 10: Pan-Caribbean Anthems of 2010

Words by Eddie STATS Houghton, photos via FADER

omegaouttake

This started out as a list of the biggest Caribbean jams of the year–like the top dancehall, soca, merengue, et cetera songs all thrown in a bag together. But as we winnowed out the bullshit it quickly became clear that it had to be a list of Pan-Caribbean anthems, not just the biggest crossover or the champion tune in a given sector but the rhythms and melodies that resonated most within the Caribbean and its diaspora, whether through collaboration innovation or sheer popularity.
