Zeen?: No Ice Cream Sound Issue #3

Words by Jesse Serwer

Susannah Webb is the DJ known as The Large (check her latest mix, Neva Soft) and the gyal behind T-shirt line/blog Shimmy Shimmy. She also produces the world’s first and only publication to share a name with a classic Johnny Osbourne soundbwoy killer. No Ice Cream Sound is in the tradition of hand-bound punk-rock fanzines but great illustrations and the distinctive artistic sensibilities apparent in everything Shimmy Shimmy color each issue, creating a unique piece d’art. The latest one is out this week and has features and/or interviews with Popcaan, Stylo G, Alric and Boyd (interviewed about house music by LargeUp’s own Erin MacLeod), Mungo’s Hi-Fi and India’s Reggae Rajahs. Cop it.

Hi, Rihanna: Federation Sound’s All-Dubplate Rihanna Birthday Mix

Words by Jesse Serwer, via Federation Sound

As you may know, our dude Max Glazer and Rihanna go way back. The Federation Sound boss man was Ms. Fenty’s original DJ, playing an instrumental role in the pop superstar’s early career, and still turns up as a DJ at her private parties. For her 24th birthday today, Mr. Glazer gave his old buddy a nice tribute by compiling an all-dubplate mix in her honor featuring pretty much every current dancehall star of note toasting to the Bajan princess’ B-day over their biggest recent hits. Popcaan’s “Ravin” and “Party Shot,” Beenie Man and Future Fambo’s “Rum and Red Bull,” Mavado’s “So Special,” Serani’s “No Games,” Vegas’ “I Am Blessed” and more all get Rihanna x 24 re-licks from the artists themselves. Stream the mix below, and download it here.

Audio: Popcaan x Busta Rhymes, “Only Man She Want (Remix)”

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Popcaan has been knocking out hit after hit over the last year on his way to becoming dancehall’s newest crossbearer, so it was only a matter of time before a major international artist stepped onto a remix of one his tunes. Frankly, we’re a bit surprised that “Only Man She Want” was the one that did the trick, as he’s had much better candidates recently, but no matter: Popcaan x Busta!!! This is definitely one of the best co-signs he could get towards breaking him in the US. Sample the official remix below and, if you like what you hear, drop $.99 on it here. Meanwhile, cop Mr. ‘Caan’s new remix, Yiy Change, here if you haven’t yet, to hear him voicing some recent hip-hop beats and classic dancehall riddims.

Fashion Fridays: Popcaan x Mixpak Records Tees

Words by Emily Shapiro—

In 2011, dancehall artist Popcaan supplied us with a ton of hits and proved he was a solo artist with staying power. And he’s hit the ground running in 2012, releasing both a video for “Only Man She Wants” and a new single “Get Gyal Easy,” all in the first week. (Stream both here). Now, Poppy, who’s been known to sport some bold fashions, is trying his hand at fashion and has linked with Brooklyn Mixpak Records, whose Dre Skull was behind “Get Gyal Easy,” for a line of merchandise. The first items are the “Get Gyal Easy” t-shirts featured above, but we understand there’s plenty more to come from the Mixpak/Popcaan axis, both musically and gear-wise, so stay tuned. In the meantime, the shirts are currently available for pre-order in the Mixpak shop.
