Words by LargeUp Crew, Photo and Video by Jason Zucker—

Carlton Livingston 2

Sure, hip-hop has The Chronic, “I Got 5 On It,” and Meth and Red’s entire catalog, but when it comes to weed-smoking anthems, reggae is king. With literally tens (if not hundreds) of thousands of reggae weed anthems to choose from, we selected some of our favorites and tapped the artist behind one of ‘em, Carlton “100 Weight of Collie Weed” Livingston, to run down the best of the best. Earlier this week, we rolled out numbers 20-11 in our first video. With 4/20 upon us, here’s the Toppa Top 10.

Visual Culture: Peter Simon’s “Reggae Bloodlines” Show

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Extra Classic Gregory isaacs

Peter Simon is one of few photographers who have documented reggae from its early days all the way through the present. His photos of people like Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Toots and Sly and Robbie are some of reggae’s most iconic images, and his work illustrated one of the earliest and best known books on reggae, 1977′s Reggae Bloodlines: In Search of the Music and Culture of Jamaica.

Tomorrow would be the 68th birthday of the late Peter Tosh, capping quite a big week for a figure who’s no longer with us. On Monday, National Heroes Day in Jamaica, the Stepping Razor was awarded a posthumous Order of Merit, a significant development for an artist whose relationship with the state during his lifetime was tenuous at best.

Jamaica today honored the late Peter Tosh—a controversial figure in his lifetime—with a posthumous Order of Merit, as part of the Heroes Day award ceremony. The honor, which comes just a month after the 25th anniversary of the reggae legend’s death, was received by Tosh’s daughter, Niambe. The award follows a symposium, “Peter Tosh: Reggae Revolutionary and Equal Rights Advocate,” held at the University of the West Indies, and comes several days before the reggae legend’s birthday, on October 19th. It would seem that now is a good time to revisit Stepping Razor Red X, the 1993 documentary on the artist and activist’s life, and certainly one of the more interesting documentaries on a reggae artist’s life.

Visual Culture: Marcus Burrowes’ ‘Sons of Thunder’ Show @ Fuse Gallery

Words by Jesse Serwer—

The work of our friend Marcus Burrowes—visual artist, streetwear pioneer, punky reggae style don, designer of our brand-new LargeUp x RockersNYC “Jamaica” tee —is the subject of a new art show opening at New York’s Fuse Gallery this week. The show, Sons of Thunder, takes its name from a Dr. Alimantado album, and, as with much of Marcus’ work, music is a central theme.
