Now Things: Exclusive Aloe Blacc Interview

Words by Eddie STATS Houghton, Photos by Fubz

AloeBlacc602

When we conceived of the idea for our Now Things series focusing on cutting-edge artists across all genre boundaries who happen to have roots in the Caribbean, Aloe Blacc was the artist we had in mind. In the time since we first got hyped about his eclectic catalog of soul, rap and salsa, he has gone on quite a rampage of world domination, performing on Jimmy Fallon, taking a Gold record in France and storming the UK charts with his HBO-placed single “I Need A Dollar” (currently at #3). Although much of the buzz has been about that particular song, Aloe’s versatility as a writer and performer gets clearer and clearer, whether he’s singing about Panama on “Patria Mia” (below), translating John Legend into Spanish or putting down his own reggae cover onstage in Germany. In the midst of that whirlwind, and right before he was set to bring his long-running, Sunday afternoon Los Angeles party The Do-Over to Puerto Rico, Aloe spent the better part of a mellow, thoughtful afternoon to sit in the sun with us at Habana Outpost in Brooklyn and go deep on his Panamanian roots, his Stones Throw LP Good Things and all the unwritten chapters of the book called Aloe Blacc.

LargeUp TV: Now Things with Los Rakas

A LargeUp Exclusive Webisode – Words by Eddie STATS

Los-Rakas-smaller

For our newest edition of Now Things series (see the features on Maluca and Kid Daytona here and here, respectively) we caught up with Panaman via Oakland rappers Los Rakas, chopping it up with the duo when they passed true NYC to destroy a show at SOBs. These dudes have generated a lot of buzz lately in all quarters, from the turfing scene in the bay to the Caribbean with their ability to jump from a playero riddim to some of the most exciting Spanglish rap happening right now. Bigger things are obviously in store cause in addition to touring with Collie Buddz, they just announced their August 20th appearance at Central Park Summerstage alongside Meta & The Cornerstones today. Click play to get the full story on them, their forthcoming EP Chancletas y Camisetas Bordada (artwork after the jump) which drops around the same time and catch a little vapor of their onstage presence. It’s going to be a Raka redhot summer.

Now Things: Exclusive Interview with The Kid Daytona

Words and Interview by Jesse Serwer

The Kid Daytona is one of New York hiphop’s best kept secrets. The dapper Antiguan MC from the Bronx balances style and substance in a fashion that reminds us of Slick Rick and Q-Tip, outerborough MCs of Caribbean heritage. Over the last few years, the Cipha Sounds protege has cultivated a rep through conceptually tight mixtapes like A Tribe Called Fresh, wherein Daytona and friends rhymed exclusively over classic ACTQ beats; and The Daytona 500, a mini-mixtape whose beats were all constructed from samples of Bob James’ “Nautilus.” His latest effort, The Interlude, takes a similar tack, turning musical interludes from classic rap albums like Illmatic and Pete Rock & CL Smooth’s The Main Ingredient into fresh, full-length jams like “NYA” (with Aloe Blacc) and “Fly Lullaby.” (Choice line: Dread in the mesh shirt/Chefing roti with goat meat in the Bahamas) New Yorkers who’ve had their ears to the street, though, might recall ‘Tona from his hiphop flip of the late Bogle’s “All Dem Deh” (featuring Jabba of Hot 97/Massive B) from way back in 2006. LargeUp recently chatted him up about his Antiguan heritage, Bronx backyard bashments and the Caribbean’s influence on hiphop…

Maluca11

We decided to launch our new Now Things series–focusing on cutting edge artists across all genre boundaries who happen to have roots in the Caribbean–with an exclusive profile on Ms. Maluca Mala of Mad Decent fame. Injecting a powerful dose of Dominican culture into what she describes as “banjee rave” music, Maluca has been generating tons of heat this year with her merengue-inflected club anthem “El Tigeraso” and her mixtape China Food, which dropped last month. Ms. Mala linked us uptown before the weather turned cold to show us around the park-scapes where she used to rave in the shadow of the Geo. Washington bridge, speak on the Caribbean element of her sound and all the other influences that shaped the tracks on China Food, from ESG to Dutch house. One of the Dutch cats she put us up on, in fact, was Oliver Twizt and their collaboration “Loca” just went up on the Mad Decent blog. Stream it here and get the full, immersive Maluca video experience after the jump.
