Bizerk Shaggy

Miami’s Circle House Studios is truly a unique environment. Producers Pharrell, Rico Love, Supa Dups and Donovan “Don Corleon” Bennett all count the recording facility, owned by Roger and Ian Lewis of Inner Circle, as their MIA homebase, meaning you’re just as likely to see Justin Bieber and Flo Rida there as reggae veterans from days of yore. If you’re lucky, you’ll catch some truly unexpected combos from different corners of the music world chopping it up in the yard (aka “Circle Village”), over some of Circle House’s famous iced tea. (It’s so good none other than Mary J. Blige has been known to shout it out in interviews). Just to give you the idea of the energy that comes out of the place, one of the most recent success stories to emerge from the studio is French Montana and Nicki Minaj’s dancehall/hip-hop banger “Freaks.”

LargeUp Premiere: French Montana x Nicki Minaj, “Freaks (Mr. Vegas Remix)”

Nicki Minaj Mr. Vegas

Team Mr. Vegas just hit us off with a double dose of remixes featuring the dancehall star on the hip-hop-meets-bashment banger of the moment, the Doug E. Fresh/Lil Vicious-inspired “Freaks” by French Montana featuring Nicki Minaj. There’s two versions here: a Vegas, Montana and Nicki version and a strictly Vegas thing for the danchehall. Vegas, fresh off an appearance at Miami’s Calle Ocho Festival, is the crossover artist of the moment, with “Party Tun Up” beginning to follow the path of “Bruk It Down” onto hip-hop clubs and radio. Let’s see if he can keep the momentum going with this one…

Nicki Minaj Freaks

French Montana and Nicki Minaj’s “Freaks” is turning out to be kind of like what Kanye’s “Mercy” was last year; that high profile hip-hop song keeping dancehall on the radio and in people’s minds, as crossover success continues to elude the real thing. “Freaks” takes its inspiration from Lil Vicious and Dough E Fresh’s 1994 hip-hop x dancehall classic of the same name, sampling both that tune and the Bam Bam riddim as heard on Chaka Demus and Pliers’ “Murder She Wrote,” while Nicki and French casually sprinkle in references to dancehall (“Some a dem say dem Gully, some a dem say dem Gaza…rah”).

Fashion Fridays: Nicki Minaj’s Leather Captain Hats

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Butch Diva Nicki Minaj

If you’ve caught American Idol this season, you’ve surely noticed Nicki Minaj rocking a look that’s more ’90s dancehall than Harajuku. The rotating cast of leather captain’s hats capping off Nicki’s rude gyal look on each episode are actually the handiwork of another Trini gyul, Tiffany Rhodes of Butch Diva, and leather craftsman Opio Chung, formerly of Ethiopian Taste, a famed record store and culture shop on Nostrand Ave. in Brooklyn. As you may recall, we featured Tiffany and her then-fledgling line in 2011, while Butch Diva muse and early supporter, Patra, wore some of the brand’s spandex bodysuits to our memorable photo shoot and interview with her that same year.

Homecoming Queen: Watch Nicki Minaj’s “Pound the Alarm” Video

nicki-minaj-trinidad

Nicki Minaj’s Trini fans have been waiting a long time for the Port-of-Spain born MC to properly tribute her culture. Roman Reloaded‘s “Pound the Alarm” isn’t really there musically but there was enough of a connection that Nicki decided to head down to Trinidad in June to recreate Carnival for the video:
