LargeUp TV: Now Things with Los Rakas

A LargeUp Exclusive Webisode – Words by Eddie STATS

Los-Rakas-smaller

For our newest edition of Now Things series (see the features on Maluca and Kid Daytona here and here, respectively) we caught up with Panaman via Oakland rappers Los Rakas, chopping it up with the duo when they passed true NYC to destroy a show at SOBs. These dudes have generated a lot of buzz lately in all quarters, from the turfing scene in the bay to the Caribbean with their ability to jump from a playero riddim to some of the most exciting Spanglish rap happening right now. Bigger things are obviously in store cause in addition to touring with Collie Buddz, they just announced their August 20th appearance at Central Park Summerstage alongside Meta & The Cornerstones today. Click play to get the full story on them, their forthcoming EP Chancletas y Camisetas Bordada (artwork after the jump) which drops around the same time and catch a little vapor of their onstage presence. It’s going to be a Raka redhot summer.

LargeUp/Federation Exclusive: Red Fox, “Money Bell” Flatlands Riddim

Words by Eddie STATS Houghton

flatlands-front-web

The Federation Sound-produced Flatlands riddim just dropped on iTunes y’all and in exchange for a promise to ring the alarm and tell the people, Feddy governor DJ Max Glazer gave us permission to stream on of our favorite tunes, “Money Bell” from veteran deejay and NYC badman Red Foxx. Foxx’s gruff voice and classic flow might be the perfect compliment to the beat which is somewhere between 90s throwback dancehall and retro-kid fresh with its crispy snares and big horn stabs but there’s no bad tunes on here, really. Only wicked tunes. Stream below and cop the full riddim run here.

Throwback Thursdays: Mad Cobra, “Flex”, “Cobrastyle” + More

Words by Eddie STATS Houghton

CobraCrop

Will probably be starting a lot of Throwback Thursday posts off with this phrase, but…remember this joint!? I do. I was in college when it dropped and my West African roommate copped the cassingle and kept it on brainwash rotation in our apartment, a 24-hour Pandora-style channel dedicated to three artists: Fela Kuti, Nigerian rapper Blackky and Cobra. One of my main memories of art school, in fact, is sitting at a figure-drawing easel clashing my classmates in a race to come up with more variations on the hook of “Flex”–Flex / Time to cash checks! (Time to eat Rice Chex, wear x-ray spex, etc.) My boy Patrick officially took the crown when he bust out in the middle of an art history lecture with: Fleeeex / Tyrannosaurus Rex!

Tempted to Taste: LargeUp Exclusive Look at Miss Lily’s

Words by Eddie STATS Houghton and Jason “J-Rockaz” Orford

miss lilys logo final

As we mentioned in our recent Limonious post, we have been haunting Miss Lily’s quite a bit lately. If you’re not hip to it yet, that’s downtown New York’s choicest new eatery, a little planetarium of authentic Jamaican roots transplanted onto West Houston Street. The bona fide vibes should be no surprise since the evil geniuses behind it include Paul Salmon of the Rockhouse Hotel in Negril and designer Serge Becker. (Becker in particular is well-known for elevating spots like this to immersive experiences on the level of fine art but less-known is the fact that he’s a connoisseur of Jamaican music, and a key figure in the legendary downtown NY reggae party Sticky Mike’s.)

Super Soca: Tiny Winey + “Black & Yellow” Poirier refix

Words by Eddie STATS Houghton

ByronLee12TinyWiney

We don’t usually cover local events on here but as long we are covering local events (see previous post) we have to give a bligh to the Tiny Winey soca party kicking off tomorrow in the LES. I am mentioning this not just because co-host Rishi Bonneville is a regular contributor and de facto soca editor here at LargeUp. Not even because it began life as a monthly guest-spot for resident selector D-Life (Massive B) at the Re-Opened Fridays dancehall party downstairs at Santos, which has basically been our living room for the past year or two. No, I am posting it here because this is, to my knowledge, the very first Manhattan monthly completely dedicated to soca, which takes it out of the ‘local parties’ and ‘homeboy network’ categories and puts it into ‘historical events’. (See? i tagged it as History. If you know different or are old enough to remember spots like Demararas, feel free to correct me in the comments).
