Cocktail Cinema: Crown Heights, Nutcracker + J’Ouvert Star in Fat Tony’s “BKNY”

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Fat Tony BKNY coconut

There’s nothing like the energy in Central Brooklyn (a/k/a “Real Brooklyn”) at the end of the summer, in the days leading up to Labor Day and the West Indian Day Parade. That’s the backdrop for “BKNY,” the latest video from NY underground rapper Fat Tony. Though the song features Jamaican-Guyanese BK rap duo Old Money, the pair are absent from the video, which instead features cameos from Mr. MFN eXquire, Kool AD of Das Racist, Nick Catchdubs, and Tenille, and landmarks like Ali’s Roti Shop and the Eastern Parkway road divider.

Interview: Diplo On The Politics of Outsider Dancehall

Words by Jesse Serwer, Interview by Eddie STATS Houghton—

Okayplayer head honcho Eddie STATS Houghton recently sat down with Diplo and Chief Boima of Dutty Artz and Ghetto Bassquake fame for a wide-ranging conversation themed around the politics of the emerging music phenomenon known as tropical bass. The concept was inspired in part by a long-running, Twitter-fueled debate between Boima and Diplo regarding the current globalization of underground music, and set out as its aim bringing that conversation to some sort of resolution. Among too many other topics to name, the conversation touched on the politics behind Major Lazer and Diplo’s interaction with the dancehall. Read below to see how that particular segment of the conversation played out. And if you never have, catch our LargeUp TV episode with Diplo in Jamaica for more on his interaction and background with dancehall culture.

Roots Reggae: Jimmy Cliff X The Roots Live at Highline Ballroom

Words by Eddie STATS Houghton

If you enjoyed Jimmy Cliff’s appearance with The Roots on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon earlier this week, then your head would surely have exploded had you been in the house when Cliff stepped onstage at the Highline Ballroom Tuesday night to open The Roots’ sold-out show with a bullet! bullet!-proof rendition of “The Harder They Come.” This exclusive clip courtesy of videographer Chris Velona is only just shy of a minute but it makes a nice teaser for both the new The Roots LP (dropping next Tuesday 12/6) and our full LargeUp TV webisode of Cliff’s ultra-exclusive show at Miss Lily’s Variety (watch this space–soon come!). Two other reasons to watch: 1) Compare with today’s Throwback to verify that at 60+, Cliff can still put on his dancing shoes when called upon 2) Black Thought channeling Bobby Byrd/Dave Barker with his “Mr. Dynamite!” outro…

LargeUp TV: Chris Blackwell Talks Rum

Words by Eddie STATS Houghton

A’right. You remember when we told you about that bashy we went to for the New York launch of Blackwell rum? Perhaps not. Things can get a little haze after a few Black & Stormies, so let us recap: Chris Blackwell is the founder of Island Records. He is the man largely responsible for the global careers of Bob Marley, Grace Jones, U2 (and a few other icons). He also maintains a string of the coolest hotels on the planet (which happen to be in Jamaica), including GoldenEye, the former residence of James Bond author Ian Fleming–a family friend. Chris Blackwell is a living legend, that is the takeaway from this paragraph. On to the next:

Throwback Thursdays Part Few: Gloria Estefan’s Grandés Exitos

Words by Natalia Linares

Along with a mess of good hiphop and soul records, this Tuesday September 27th saw the release of Latin pop legend Gloria Estefan’s comeback LP Miss Little Havana, featuring Pharrell Williams of The Neptunes fame among other contributors. Since this is something of a milestone in Caribbean music, it seemed only right to double down on our Throwback Thursday game for an all-day pan-Latin extravaganza. So on top of DJ Chief Boima’s breakdown of Big Boy (previous post) our favorite Cubana and honorary Raka Natalia Linares provides some context for the new release with a rundown of essential La Gloria moments:
