Ticket Giveaway: Lee “Scratch” Perry in NYC, Thurs. May 17

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Even during his Beastie Boys-assisted revival in the mid ’90s, who would have imagined that in 2012, at age 76, Lee “Scratch” Perry would still be regularly touring the world? Scratch, who performed in NYC as recently as last September, returns to New York for a show at the Gramercy Theatre this Thursday, May 17, with support from our own DJ Gravy and Subatomic Sound System. He can’t do this forever, so if you’re a fan and can make it out, we suggest you do. You can buy your tickets here, but we’ve got two (2) pairs give away, though. To win, follow Largeupdotcom on Twitter and RT our tweet with this post and the correct answer to this question: What Lee Perry tune was used in a commercial for Cadbury’s Fruit and Nut chocolate bar? We’ll see the first two of you to hit us with that answer on Thursday night.

Video: Ski Beatz feat. Los Rakas, “Mr. Miyagi”

Words by Jesse Serwer—

We’ve been doing our part to spread the Panabaynian gospel of Los Rakas for a while now and it seems that more and more people are catching on to what the duo of Rakas Dun and Rico have to offer. Fresh off their recent collaboration with fellow Bay Area-n, E-40, and being spotted in the studio with Diplo, legendary Brooklyn hip-hop producer Ski Beatz, of Roc-a-Fella fame, has tapped the duo for his upcoming Latin hip-hop project, 24 Hour Karate School Presents: 24 Horas Escuela de Karate. The result is a brief crane kick in the face called “Mr. Miyagi,” and it now has an NYC-set video which captures the interested parties (and one breakdancing toddler) soaking up NYC from the Williamsburg Bridge and a BK rooftop.Check it out below.

Video: Nas Brings “The Don” To Life

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Nas has been on a roll leading up to his upcoming Life is Good LP, beginning with last summer’s invigorating “Nasty” and, most recently, the highly personal “Daughters.” It’s the SuperCat-sampling ‘The Don,” co-produced by Salaam Remi and the late Heavy D (as well as Da Internz), that gives us hope that Nas might finally be set to break the curse of mediocre post-Illmatic albums. This song just hits hard in a way no other rap tunes are hitting right now, while Nas’ inclusion of SuperCat (not to mention production from a pair of Caribbeans in Salaam and Heavy) is a positive sign for those hoping reggae-inflected hip-hop will make a comeback.

Throwback Thursdays: Skadanks, “Everybody African”

Words by DJ Gravy—

Back when New York was a dangerous and cutting edge city, before the homogenization, and when reggae and its byproduct, hip hop, were still getting aquainted, a group of bright kids who went to the esteemed Stuyvesant High School together put a group together called the Skadanks.
