We’ve got a whole heap of guests stopping by the LargeUp Sessions on RadioLily.com tonight: Los Rakas, New Kingston and author Mike Alleyne. Though they come from very different places— New Kingston are a three-piece band from NYC via Jamaica, and Los Rakas are a hip-hop duo from California’s Bay Area, by way of Panama—both groups come to the LargeUp Sessions fresh off the Dark ‘N Stormy Tour with Collie Buddz, which crisscrossed the Western US this fall. Meanwhile, Alleyne, a professor at Middle Tennessee University, will discuss his newly published Encyclopedia of Reggae book with us.

New Kingston—brother trio Courtney, Tahir (also known as “Slim”) and Stephen (aka “Suki”)—have been staples at live reggae events in New York since their early teens, while recent years have seen them trod the world on tour with Collie Buddz. Along the way, and with the help of their veteran session player father (and bassist), Courtney Sr., they’ve honed their own pop-reggae sound, a style they’re set to showcase on the upcoming album, Kingston University. “Life” is the first single from the LP, out Feb. 5 and, if you enjoy the melodica, this one is definitely for you. Sure, the foundation-style riddim and Uhuru-esque vocals start off the thing with a nice vibes. But it’s the appearance of an Augustus Pablo-like melodica that elevates “Life” to the next level, and has us playing this one on repeat.

Unless you been living under an internet-sized rock, you’re probably already aware of Wesley “Diplo” Pentz’s restless, jetsetting activities as a DJ, producer, label-head and laser-equipped cyborg. Since bussing out with his Philly-based party Hollertronix in the early 00s he has established himself as an unparalleled breaker of underground sounds, from Brazilian baile funk to UK grime. Likewise the list of inspiring new artists that he’s had a hand in discovering and exposing–from Baltimore club auteur Blaqstarr to South African rockers BLK JKS–is global in scope and alphabetical in length.
