Mykal Rose Showdown Inna Bloody Town

We’ve always got an open ear to lend new music from Mykal Rose. Anyone who tells you Rose isn’t one of reggae’s greatest vocalists is buggin’, and his voice hasn’t lost any of its power since his peak with Black Uhuru 30 years ago. Rose’s new LP, Show Down Inna Bloody Town, was recorded in California’s Bay Area, and along with the new surroundings have come some new sounds for Mr. Tutu Tweng, specifically splashes of Ethiopian jazz and Afrobeat.

Carlton Livingston

The St. Mary-born, Kingston-raised singer is responsible for one of reggae’s biggest weed tunes ever,  “100 Weight of Collie Weed.” And he’s got more where that came from: his “Trodding Through the Jungle” made an appearance on our Toppa Top 10 Slept-On Weed Anthems for 4/20 last year, too. After catching up with Carlton at last month’s Rice and Peas party, we brought him over to the The Kennel Recording Studio in Brooklyn to count down our Toppa Top 20 Weed Anthems for 4/20.

Easy Star All-Stars, the musical crew behind the much-celebrated 2003 Pink Floyd reggae tribute Dub Side of the Moon and the Radiohead covers album Radiodread, have been building hype for their upcoming LP over the last few weeks by keeping it’s exact identity a secret, encouraging fans to pick which classic album they thought they were set to tackle. After checking possibilities like Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On and U2′s The Joshua Tree off the list, today they’ve removed the curtain and unveiled Thrillah, a reggae tribute to Michael Jackson’s Thriller due out Aug. 28
