Wayne Marshall featuring Mavado in “My Heart”

Words by DJ Gravy

Back in mid April, we brought the exclusive story on Drake’s trip to Jamaica to shoot the music video for “Find Your Love“, in which Mavado plays the badman who wants to shoot Drake over one of his girls. The video was an instant #1 on MTV, complete with Mavado ramblin’ in patois (surprisingly) without any subtitles!

Demarco “Shows” Commercial Strength

Words by DJ Theory

Demarco’s new video “Show It” (ft Craig from Voicemail) has broken through the tough outer skin of commercial Hip Hop/R&B (and god forbid reggae) in the states courtesy of its recent debut on 106 & Park on BET. As you may know, 106 & Park is one of the most influential platforms for any artist to appear on, and rarely is a reggae/dancehall artist featured (one “reggae” artist who’s videos air on the show regularly would be Sean Kingston, but that’s mostly due to his relentlessly commercial appeal, teenage fan base, and bubble gum pop lyrics).  As the official video (watch it after the jump) demonstrates, “Show It” is a definite club-banger poised for commercial success, and it goes without saying that Demarco and Craig would have no reservations about seeing some of that mainstream $$ find it’s way into their pockets…

Studio Beast: Claude Kelly, Hit Songwriter

Interview by Dwane Rich Words by DJ Gravy

In this day and age, being a star isn’t quite all it’s cracked up to be.  However, being behind the scenes can sometimes be the best scene of all (and free of TMZ-like parasites).  In the case of the music industry, getting publishing checks can be a lot more rewarding (and less dramatic) than being the headliner in the spotlight.  If an artist with hit songs falls off, the writer behind the songs moves on to the next project, and while recognized in the industry, doesn’t need bodyguards and Escalades with tinted windows to go out for brunch!  Meet the biggest new songwriter in the game, Claude Kelly.

Watch the Video for Gyptian’s “Hold Yuh”

Words by DJ Gravy

I predicted this one might be a powerful cross over for Gyptian. Produced by Brooklyn’s own Ricky Blaze, the riddim’s sparse arrangement lends itself incredibly well to a good sound system… Sidenote, the video version has harmonies that are not in the version we play out. While the video may or may not make it to MTV, the tune is definitely getting play on urban radio, climbing the Hip Hop/R&B charts, and straight killing in the clubs!
