Run Film, Projector!: “Better Mus’ Come” x Mr. Vegas at Lincoln Center

Words by Eddie STATS, Photos by Kevin Ornelas—

Yesterday evening inside New York’s renowned Lincoln Center, LargeUp was proud to be the media sponsor of the East Coast premiere of Storm Saulter’s award-winning film Better Mus’ Come, presented by ImageNation Cinema Foundation and the Film Society of Lincoln Center. Having played at Los Angeles’ Pan-African Film Festival just a few days before, it was only the second stateside screening of the feature–generally recognized as the toughest film out of Jamaica since The Harder They Come.

Twitter Contest: Tickets to Better Mus’ Come (And Mr. Vegas!) at Lincoln Center, 2/16

Words by LargeUp Crew—

We’ve been bigging up Jamaican director Storm Saulter and his directorial debut Better Mus’ Come for years, and, recently, we told you about the long-awaited NY premiere of the movie at Lincoln Center’s Walter Reade Theater. Well, we’re pleased to announce the event’s gotten even more exciting with the addition of dancehall legend turned festival-tune revivalist Mr. Vegas, who will perform what is sure to be a historic unplugged set prior to the screening. We can’t say for sure but we think this might be the first time a dancehall artist has been billed at Lincoln Center.

LargeUp TV: Mr. Vegas’ ‘Sweet Jamaica’ Unplugged

Words by Jesse Serwer, Photos and Video by Kevin Ornelas—

Two more clips from Mr. Vegas’ intimate (and awesome) acoustic Sweet Jamaica performance/album preview at Miss Lily’s Variety last Thursday night here. (If you haven’t already, watch part one, his stirring version of Toots and the Maytals’ “Sweet and Dandy”). First up is the title track, followed by one called “Roses In My Garden,” a festival-style tune that Vegas explains took root from some old Eric Donaldson.

LargeUp TV: Mr. Vegas Unplugged, ‘Sweet and Dandy’

Words by Jesse Serwer:::Photo and Videos by Kevin Ornelas—

Mr. Vegas gets props (although not as much as he should) for being a great dancehall hitmaker but a lot of people don’t realize just how awesome and unique of a singer he is. As Vegas told us in our recent interview, his heroes are Barrington Levy, Alton Ellis and Tenor Saw, Jamaican tenors with unmistakeable vocal character. On the upcoming Sweet Jamaica LP (out Feb. 21), he makes a damn good case for being classified in the same league as them, with vintage-style originals and spot-on recreations of classics like Ellis’ “You’ve Made Me So Very Happy” and Hopeton Lewis’ “Take it Easy.”

Sweet Jamaica Live: Mr. Vegas Unplugged at Miss Lily’s Variety

Words by DJ Gravy, Photos by Kevin Ornelas—

Last night, Mr. Vegas offered the audience at Miss Lily’s Variety an intimate preview of his upcoming album, Sweet Jamaica.  The theme of the night followed suit with the album’s celebration of Jamaica’s musical legacy and its upcoming 50th anniversary of independence. Vegas was in great spirits and created a real moment in time with the help of his lovely backup singers, Tony Bone on acoustic guitar and Rob ‘Boomshots’ Kenner, who curated the performance, jumping on the mic every couple of songs to ask Vegas questions and generally comment on how unique and special this event was.

LargeUp Interview: Talking ‘Sweet Jamaica’ with Mr. Vegas

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Over the last 15 years, Mr. Vegas has probably been the most consistent dancehall artist. While never attaining the household-name status of a Sean Paul or Elephant Man, the singjay has pumped out hit after hit—not the disposable kind but classics we’ll be hearing for decades to come, like “Heads High” and “Tek Weh Yuh Self.”
