LargeUp Premiere: Mr. Vegas feat. Alison Hinds, “Bruk It Down” Soca Remix

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Mr. Vegas’ “Bruk it Down” has been one of the biggest tunes across the Caribbean this year, and it certainly was a hit with the women of Barbados when Vegas came to visit for the Reggae on the Beach festival in April. Just in time for Cropover, Vegas and St. Lucia’s 758 have remixed the Teetimus-produced original into a soca workout featuring Barbados’ top songstress, Alison Hinds, and new lyrics calling out to all the Bajan, Guyanese, Bahamian, Trini, Lucian and Grenadian ladies.

Giveaway: Win A “Sweet Jamaica” Prize Pack From Mr. Vegas

Words by Jesse Serwer—

We’ve been raving about Mr. Vegas’ Sweet Jamaica since we first heard the album at the top of the year. The dancehall tunes on disc one, the new versions and updates of classic Jamaican festival songs on disc two, and the classic reggae poster-inspired cover art all come together to form one of the best reggae album packages in recent memory.

Miami Vibes: Rolling Stone Spotlights Dancehall + Best of the Best

Words by Emily Shapiro, Photo by Alex Markow, via Rolling Stone

The annual Best of the Best concert during Urban Beach Weekend in Miami (or what’s known as Memorial Day Weekend to the rest of the United States) is  perhaps the only major U.S. festival where we see the stars of dancehall share equal billing with their hip-hop counterparts. While rappers like Meek Mill, Fabolous and Fat Joe topped this year’s bill, prime time was also reserved for I-Octane and Mavado, who recently signed to DJ Khaled’s label, We the Best, and LargeUp favorite Mr. Vegas closed the show, Shaggy, Serani, Chris Martin, Demarco, Marcia Griffiths, Admiral Bailey and other Jamaican artists also performed, while LargeUp friends Walshy Fire and Jabba were among the concert’s many hosts.

LargeUp TV: Mr. Vegas’ Sweet Jamaica Unplugged— “Things Ruff”

Words by Jesse Serwer, Photo and Video by Kevin Ornelas—

Amidst the covers and originals on Mr. Vegas’ Sweet Jamaica, out today after a several-months delay, are a handful of songs that see the dancehall great reinterpret reggae standards into new songs that match the feel and vibe of the original with more up-to-the-moment lyrical styles. One such tune is “Things Ruff,” an update of Jimmy Cliff’s “You Can Get It If You Really Want.” In the above clip, filmed during Vegas’ intimate performance at Miss Lily’s Variety in New York this past January, Vegas and his backup singers offer up an unplugged version of “Things Ruff.” As the tune progresses, it gradually becomes “You Can Make It,” offering an inside-out view of how one song can birth one another. Watch the video below, and check out some more of Vegas’ Sweet Jamaica unplugged performance here, here and here.
