Mixtape Mondays: Natalie Storm, 77Klash, Red Rat, Kevin Lyttle, Shinehead + More

Words by Eddie STATS Houghton

Happy Monday. Ugh. We wish we could upload a steaming mug of Blue Mountain coffee and link it to you but that technology is still being tested. We can, however, beam out a few liters of premium-blend reggae, dancehall, soca, dubstep and champeta which will have a similar effect on your sluggish monday-morning metabolism. When it hit you, I’m told, you feel no pain…and it’s even said (by Jahdan) that it “nice like a coffee whey in a ther-mos!”  Music we a talk bout, the free kind and there’s a lot of it, so let’s get started or you’ll still be downloading next monday:

Where You Get Dem New Clarks There Baby???

Words By j-RockaZ

babyclarks

True Story: I was on the subway a few days ago tapping some notes into my iPhone, when my personal space was invaded by a little foot, swaying from side to side. This tiny tot had the coolest shoes I peeped all day (and a pacifier to match). I looked closer to find out he was rockin’ a pair of Clarks, the latest fashion on the playground scene. Little man was visiting NYC from England with his Mommy, Gram and Aunty who all happened to be reggae enthusiasts. Well, as soon as I touched the street I hit up Google for a better look. That’s right y’all: Clarks for Kids. Visit the Clarks site to view the available styles. While you won’t find kiddy versions of the Desert Boot or the Wallabee, I’m sure you’ll find something cool and classic for your little one. If you’re a diehard Clarks connoisseur,  you won’t mind the UK shipping costs.

Max Glazer x Scion

Words by Eddie STATS Houghton

scionEP602

We’ve been so caught up in Labor Day madness round here (more pics soon!) that we almost forgot to give a mention to this extra-size release from top selector and friend of the blog Max Glazer. Scion AV sponsored this EP/book project titled 5 The Hard Way, no doubt because it features five of dancehall’s now generation–Mr. Lexx, TNT, Terro 3000, Ricky Blaze and Redddaz–doing the bloodclaat thing over original Max Glazer riddims. The EP is downloadable here but we recommend you try to cop the accompanying booklet, which is an art object in itself, making good use of spectrum-effect silkscreen lettering in a vintage dancehall poster style, not to mention the photography of Peter Dean Rickards and Largeup’s own visual director Martei Korley. You can always catch Max’s selections on the Federation Invasion Scion radio channel–or you can just come to Santos and raise a glass with us!

Spragga Benz x Salaam Remi’s “Shotta Culture” Album Release Party

Words by DJ Gravy::: Pics by Tono Radvany

You may have caught some of  the “Shotta Culture” music videos (and some behind the scenes footage) we at Largeup posted over the the last few months. And this past Tuesday, August 31st, dancehall icon, Spragga Benz, and Grammy winning producer, Salaam Remi, got some friends together to celebrate the release of their new concept album, “Shotta Culture” at Santos Party House.

Music videos off the record were played on a giant screen and  I (DJ Gravy) was there to play some tunes alongside Federation’s Max Glazer and Kenny Meez. Largeup’s Tono Radvany caught some pics that captured the vibe of the evening, enjoy.

This is the Way: Exclusive Spragga Benz Album Release Party

Words by Eddie STATS Houghton

SpraggaBenz-flyer2

Two things. First off, the new Spragga Benz video “This is The Way,” which eloquently explores the shotta side of his brand new Shotta Culture project–which you have probably heard us mention once or twice–demonstrating the proper way to hold a nine and also making extensive use of bumba-cam technology to give you a good cross-section of current styles in women’s swimwear at his poolside bashy. More importantly, the beat is one of the illest yet, showcasing producer Salaam Remi’s trademark hiphop-reggae fusion. Its backbone is a grimy crime-fiction piano vamp reminiscent in feel of Slick Rick’s “Children’s Story,” but backed up with a sizzling ska-ish rhythm section that recalls the best of Spragga’s back-catalog with tunes like “PumPum Conqueror”–watch the full video below!
