Wes Gully: Diplo Remixes Mavado’s “Delilah”

What with the lack of big crossover hits, few big-name producers and remixers have dipped their hands into dancehall waters this year. One hit that’s grabbing some attention, though, is Mavado’s “Delilah.” Wesley “Diplo” Pentz, in the midst of re-tooling Major Lazer for an upcoming sophomore release said to feature contributions from Mavado, has taken a stab at “Delilah,” setting dubstep wobbles against the original’s poppy melodies. The well-timed remix also coincides with the biggest news item regarding Mavado in quite some time: that he’s re-gained the visa that has kept him out of the US since last spring. This weekend, two weeks after visiting New York for an interview with Bobby Konders and Jabba on radio station Hot 97, the Gully Gad announced he will play his first stageshow back in the US on Sept. 4 at the Reggae Rhythm & Blues concert in Queens, New York City.

Fashion Fridays: RepJA Summer Collection

Words by Jesse Serwer

Our friends at streewear label RepJA dropped us a note the other day to tell us their 2011 summer collection–their first since Wiz Khalifa took their profile up a notch by sporting their Gully T on his Complex cover–is out. Forget the spring heatwave, the June 21 solstice, July 4, and all of those other landmarks–the season is really on now. This time, ATL/NY-based designers Prince Graham and Omar Thomas got their inspiration from the past—see the “Uni-T” with great rivals Beenie Man and Bounty below–and the present movements like Mavado’s recent hit, “Star Bwoy.” Scan some shots from their lookbook below, and head over to their site for the full line.

Gully Business: Mavado Launches New Label With ‘Delilah’

Words by Jesse Serwer

Mavado_by_carlington_wilmot+dancehall+news

Mavado isn’t the sort of artist we can picture packing his lunch into a briefcase and squinting at contracts through his glasses all day but the Gully Gad has nonetheless used his star (bwoy) power to form his own label, Mansion Records. The first release on the imprint (which, Mavado told the Jamaica Star, may also be releasing music from Assassin and Munga) is “Delilah,” a single released today to iTunes. The track, produced by Mavado and Logwood Productions and released in two different (yet very similar) mixes by Stephen McGregor and Jeremy Harding, might be Mavado’s most pop tune to date, his distinctive vocals offering the only hint that it was crafted in Jamaica and not LA or Atlanta. With summer almost upon us and no new reggae/dancehall tunes making any major impact on U.S. radio, we can picture this sliding into the Hot 97 playlists of the world with the quickness of a Drake and Trey Songz combination.

Mixtape Mondays: Black Chiney, Sensi Movement, Massive B & Safari Sound

Words by DJ Theory and Eddie STATS Houghton

MM-6200 copy

Black Chiney, 10 Year Anniversary Mix: What can you really say about Black Chiney? Members Supa Dups, Walshy Fire, Bobby Chin and Willy Chin have been callin’ shots and murdering sounds for years and years with no tears. Ten years, specifically, and they’ve just launched a mix CD and tour to commemorate that fact. The silky r&b special intro (from Notch?) is so sick, moving directly into a plate of the hiphop reggae remixes that made them famous in the first place, including the Vybz Kartel remix of Eminem’s Supa Dups-produced “W.T.P“. The mix closes out with a grip of their classic live sets and a preview of their 10th Anniversary Tour, which starts May 14th in their homebase of Miami, then heads to Canada, the Caribbean, and Europe. Make plans accordingly and download the mix here, or stream at Soundcloud.

Mr. Williamz

It’s been a bumper few weeks for UK dancehall. In last month’s update, I mentioned that there are many reasons to be optimistic about the current state of the music over here. Here are some of those reasons:

Storm Front: New Video for Daseca’s Category 5 Riddim

Words by Jesse Serwer

YouTube has been a blessing and a curse for dancehall videos, enhancing their quantity and visibility but rarely their quality. Director Winston Mayhew‘s visually stimulating work for Busy Signal and others are often exceptions, and his latest clip, for a medley featuring all six tunes on Daseca’s tempestuous Category 5 riddim, doesn’t disappoint. Astutely, each artist is filmed in starkly different yet character-appropriate environs—party dude Serani lounges in a rum shack, rootsman I-Octane’s in a weed-clouded car, Mavado’s in (where else) a cemetery, Bugle’s out on a pier in the harbor (Okay, we’re not exactly sure how that particular setting suits his character but it looks good). The end result is a rare YouTube-era video with a truly wide and original breadth of Jamaican scenery. On the musical tip, the Gully Gad’s appearance is saved, climactically, for last but it’s Serani’s infectuous turn on “Clouds” that had us rewinding the month-old riddim release (Which you can buy at Amazon or iTunes, or stream below on Soundcloud). We’re not sure of the name of the hand-based raindance ‘Rani and friends are doing, but we have a hunch it may be a major source of precipitation this summer.
