Pon Di Runway Side: Fashion’s Night Out Gets Gully With Mavado

Words by Jesse Serwer, Photos by Yofray Ray

We’re in the midst of Fashion Week here in New York, so Fashion Fridays is now Fashion Mondays, Fashion Tuesdays, etc. You can try to run, but you can’t hide from the monster. Nuh stush ting for us, though: we spent “Fashion’s Night Out” Thursday evening chopping it up with Mavado, in a suite at Manhattan’s Yotel. (As it turns out, he went on quite the shopping spree earlier in that day, hitting Alife, Christian Louboutin–for his baby’s mama–and even hunting for a chandelier). Then it was downstairs to the hotel’s lounge for “Married to the Gully,” a Fashion’s Night Out event that paired ‘Vado with female-centric streetwear label Married to the M.O.B. The night was capped with a live performance (including “Last Night,” “Star Bwoy” “Weh Dem A Do” and all of his staple hits) for a crowd that included Shaggy, Cipha Sounds, Jabba, a lot of models and, we’re told, a number of fashion brand execs looking to partner with the singer. We captured the whole thing on film, which we’ll soon be posting in the form of an exclusive webisode. In the meantime, check out some raw footage from the show from our friends at Federation Sound (whose Max Glazer provided the sounds for the event).

Big Man Business: Exclusive Q+A with Shaggy

Words by Jesse Serwer

It’s hard to think of anyone to whom the description “fun loving” applies more than Shaggy. But these are serious times, especially for a Jamaican recording artist, and Shaggy has more than sex and partying on his mind. Speaking over the phone during a tour stop in Cyprus earlier this summer, the owner of the best-selling dancehall album of all time shared his thoughts on the decline of the reggae business and the music industry as a whole, and why having more mega-hit singles would only be a pain in his neck. It’s rare to hear an artist who has achieved such overwhelming commercial success in the not-too-distant past sound so content with his transition into a legacy act. Be sure to check back here tomorrow for more, as Mr. Bombastic explains his new role as Jamaica’s spokesperson for culture, and how his recent Summer in Kingston EP ties in with next summer’s London Olympics.

Married to the Gully: Mavado x Downtown Fashion Label Married to the M.O.B.

Words by Jesse Serwer

If Jamaican dancehall and the New York fashion world are colliding in some unexpected way, you can bet Matt Goias has something to do with it. Perhaps the only person in the world equally knowledgeable about, and connected in, both of those arenas, Matt has orchestrated a partnership between Mavado and the Alliance and lady-friendly downtown fashion label Married to the M.O.B (maybe you’ve seen their KAWS-designed bikinis) to produce a special event–with a performance from Mavado, and Max Glazer on the 1s and 2s–to celebrate Fashion’s Night Out and Fashion Week, at the new Yotel in Hell’s Kitchen. Yup, Gully Gad, downtown scenesters and fashion industry types are all gonna be partying. (Maybe Betsy Johnson will show up and do the dutty wine?) To commemorate the event, they have produced a super limited-edition sticker for attendees. Good luck getting your hands on one of these…

Heds and Dreds: Uncle Murda, “Warning” Video + More

Words by Jesse Serwer

Can’t say I was much of an Uncle Murda fan, or had more than a passing familiarity with any of his songs, until his new single, “Warning” started gaining traction here in NYC recently. Simply put, it’s the hardest rap song to make it anywhere near radio recently, and its beat is one of the year’s most arresting. At the center of said beat is a chipmunked sample of Barrington Levy scatting his way through “Murderer” that actually makes you think maybe the corpse of chipmunk soul might still have some life in it ten years after The Blueprint and “U Don’t Know.” “Warning” had me revisiting a catalog of a rapper I’d always kinda avoided. Murda is not Caribbean but dude is so thoroughly Brooklyn he has to have at least several raggamuffin-y tunes to his credit, right? Sure enough, he does. Check the recently-dropped video for “Warning” and read on for mo’ Murda after the jump.

So, Canada Can Dance: SYTYCD x Dancehall

Words by Erin MacLeod

So You Think You Can Dance is not a TV show. It’s a global phenomenon. With twenty versions of the contest airing worldwide, the program has showcased a huge range of different styles–from capoiera to tango to the waltz. On more than a few occasions, dancehall has been tossed into the mix, but with varying results. Finland’s version of the show has tried to sprinkle in a touch of Jamaica but with limited success. See the valiant, yet perhaps not passable, exhibit A:
