The LargeUp Sessions Mixtape Vol. 1: D-Life’s T&T 50 Mix

Words by LargeUp Crew—

2012 is a huge year for the Caribbean as many of its nations are celebrating 50 years of independence. This milestone ties into the anti colonial struggle which Rastafari is largely based on and the general sense of nationalism that makes Caribbean music so powerful. To mark the occasion we’ve launched our LargeUp Sessions Mixtape series, and to rep T&T we got one of the top Soca DJs in the game, Massive B‘s D-Life. He’s a resident selector on NYC’s Hot97, Miami’s Mixx96 and Sirius Satellite and happens to be a good friend of ours here at LargeUp.

So with no further adieu, stream or download on the player below, you may wanna draw for your rum stash and if at all possible, bring the mix outdoors, buss a whine and lick a shot for T&T!  Also, if you spot D-Life rocking w/ Massive B at this years West Indian Day Parade on monday in Brooklyn you might get yourself a limited copy of the CD – and as always, LargeUp yourself!

Boom Wa Dis: Burro Banton Returns

Words by Jesse Serwer—

One of the most underrated deejays of the ’80s and ’90s and even 2000s, Burro Banton hasn’t made too many music videos but you can count on the ones he does make to be quite memorable. His latest collaborative effort with his longtime label home/producers Massive B, “Gangster Paradise” is no exception, equally solid both musically and visually. Perhaps the most notable feature of the gritty clip is the sight of the typically stoic Burro—maybe aggravated is a better way to describe his presence—getting loose with his feet. According to the Massive B YouTube page, “Gangster Paradise” will be on a Burro Banton Greatest Hits disc due out this month. Boom wa dis!

Mixtape Mondays: Black Chiney, Sensi Movement, Massive B & Safari Sound

Words by DJ Theory and Eddie STATS Houghton

MM-6200 copy

Black Chiney, 10 Year Anniversary Mix: What can you really say about Black Chiney? Members Supa Dups, Walshy Fire, Bobby Chin and Willy Chin have been callin’ shots and murdering sounds for years and years with no tears. Ten years, specifically, and they’ve just launched a mix CD and tour to commemorate that fact. The silky r&b special intro (from Notch?) is so sick, moving directly into a plate of the hiphop reggae remixes that made them famous in the first place, including the Vybz Kartel remix of Eminem’s Supa Dups-produced “W.T.P“. The mix closes out with a grip of their classic live sets and a preview of their 10th Anniversary Tour, which starts May 14th in their homebase of Miami, then heads to Canada, the Caribbean, and Europe. Make plans accordingly and download the mix here, or stream at Soundcloud.
