NYC: Los Rakas Release Event at Tammany Hall 8/19 + “Ta Lista” Download

Words by Eddie STATS Houghton

As trumpeted, LargeUp is proud to bring you the official release event for Los Rakas’ new EP Chancletas y Camisetas Bordadas (translated roughly as: “Flip-flops & Wifebeaters”) which is going down this coming Friday, August 19th at Tammany Hall in LES, New York. Controlling the DJ set is an all-star line-up including the Rice & Peas/Re-Opened core team of Max Glazer, DJ Gravy & Micro Don plus myself Eddie STATS (hola), pan-tropicalist Chief Boima (who produced several of the tracks on the EP) and Uproot Andy of Que Bajo fame (who also happened to produce Los Rakas’ breakthrough joint “Abrazame“). If thats not enough, Raka Dun and Raka Rich of LR will be hosting the vent in the flesh (and we have to expect that they’ll touch the mic at some point).

Universidad de la Calle: Los Rakas Webisode Part Few

Words by Eddie STATS Houghton

Yes it’s part 2 (and 3!) of Soy Rakas University, a seminar in “urban studies” conducted by professors Raka Dun and Raka Rich of Los Rakas, shot by Nina Parks. First we get a quick preview of the raka-face tattoo Dun is fitting to get on his arm and then it’s straight to master class with guest lecturer/tattoo artist Orio Guerava of San Francisco’s Soul Patch Tattoo Parlor for the full tat session, including play-by-play commentary by Rich in the background.

Universidad de la Calle: Los Rakas Webisode

Words by Eddie STATS Houghton

Ever since we featured Los Rakas in our Now Things series it seems like they are on their grind super-heavy. Now they are holding class on how to be Raka with a webisode series directed by Nina Parks called Soy Raka University. On the lesson plan for the first day of school skateboard philosophy, white tee etiquette and minerology (at Highline Jewelers–”Where The Bay Comes To Shine”). And if that is not enough Raka, check in next friday for part 2 plus watch out for their Central Park Summerstage performance on August 20th and BY THE WAY, the night before (9/19) Large Up will be bringing you the release event for their new EP Chancletas y Camisetas Bordada. at Tamanny Hall in the LES! Stay tuned for more details.

LargeUp Exclusive: Win Tickets to See Los Rakas + Maluca in NYC 7/21

Words by Jesse Serwer and Eddie STATS Houghton

Armin Van Buuren, be damned. Heineken might be Dutch but left-of-center Latin music is what it’s meant to be drank to, and to prove it they’ve organized “The Spot,” a series of performances and parties (curated by Latin nightlife guide Remezcla) featuring Tego Calderon, Los Rakas, Maluca and more at a top-secret location in New York City. We can’t tell you where Los Rakas, Maluca and Brazilian baile funk star Zuzuka Poderosa will be this Thursday night (July 21st) at 8 PM but we do have two free pairs of tickets to the event to give away. For your chance, follow us on twitter and tweet the following phrase: I want to win tix to see Los Rakas & Maluca at #TheSpot by #Heineken this thursday thanks to @largeupdotcom. Remember you MUST follow @largeupdotcom so we can DM you confirmation and details on how to collect your tix if you win (and if you can’t spell ‘Maluca’ correctly, we’re sorry but you don’t qualify).  In the meantime, get familiar by watching our Now Things webisodes with Maluca and Los Rakas, and check a video preview of the series (which actually kicked off last week—sorry, Tego fans) below.
