As you may have heard, Mavado has joined DJ Khaled’s We the Best Music Group and, by extension, the YMCMB empire. After releasing his first track through the new situation in December, “Emergency,” Mavado is featured on a pair of tunes from Khaled’s Kiss the Ring, which drops tomorrow. “Suicidal Thoughts” and “Actionpak,” gathered here in a new medley video with cameos from Birdman and a surprisingly silent Khaled, fall at opposite ends of the spectrum musically. The Boi-1da-produced “Suicidal Thoughts” is a hip-hop track with big, up-front drums while “Action Pak” is some straight up dancehall business. Watch the clip below:

If you are on your rap grind you probably hearda this new-brand Weezy track which is burning up the webosphere but we couldn’t let a weird interpolation of Caribbean folk music go un-blogged. In a nice tiki-trap companion piece to Theophilus London’s King Cole impression, Bangladesh chopped up Harry Belafonte’s Coconut Grove classic “Banana Boat Song,” which of course is an authentic Jamaican folk tune, originally sung by dockworkers back in the Banana Republic days. Since Bangladesh is the creator of “A Milli”–another weird patois interpolation–we can expect that a) it will be a hit and b) if it is ‘Desh will make a career out of chopping up odd soundbites of nation language (or imitations thereof).

Reggaeitus–it’s contagious! In the last decade there has been a growing pattern of songs that included (or attempted to include) elements of reggae. A slice of reggae pie with your bubblegum, if you will. There have been horrible tracks that blended about as well as you would expect the flavors of rumcake and bubblegum to compliment each other. But still–we’ve been blessed with some cool tunes as well.

Demarco’s new video “Show It” (ft Craig from Voicemail) has broken through the tough outer skin of commercial Hip Hop/R&B (and god forbid reggae) in the states courtesy of its recent debut on 106 & Park on BET. As you may know, 106 & Park is one of the most influential platforms for any artist to appear on, and rarely is a reggae/dancehall artist featured (one “reggae” artist who’s videos air on the show regularly would be Sean Kingston, but that’s mostly due to his relentlessly commercial appeal, teenage fan base, and bubble gum pop lyrics). As the official video (watch it after the jump) demonstrates, “Show It” is a definite club-banger poised for commercial success, and it goes without saying that Demarco and Craig would have no reservations about seeing some of that mainstream $$ find it’s way into their pockets…
