LargeUp Premiere: Toddla T vs. David Heartbreak feat. Mr. Lexx, “Pum Pum”

Words by DJ Theory —

Bashment mechanics Toddla T and David Heartbreak meet bedroom specialist Mr Lexx to give us some insight on what it means to be a modern-day gallis on their new tune titled, you guessed it.. Pum Pum. Taking authentic dancehall to the electronic stage can be a little tricky, but each of these dudes know the deal with crossover territory and have been pushing the boundaries with major releases and collaborations in their respective corners. For this new double dose of versions from Toddla’s Girls Music imprint, you get a taste of raw dancehall vibes inna moombahton fashion. The artist formerly known as Lexxus is in vintage form, riding the signature 108bpm riddim with his distinctive flow, and a couple nods to hip-hop.

Audio: Mr. Lexx x The Wizard, “Rugu Rugu” + “Pon Mi”

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Mr. Lexx hasn’t put out an album in a dozen years—not since his first, AKA…Mr. Lex, back before he had to change his name from Lexxus. Good news then that one of our favorite deejays is finally ready to unleash a followup, LEXXICON: The Lexx Factor (FiWi Music/21 Music Group). Building on Lexx’s recent success dabbling outside of traditional dancehall waters with Major Lazer, Congorock and the like, “Rugu Rugu” and “Pon Mi” meet dancehall and experimental electronic vibes halfway. The onomatopoeic “Rugu Rugu” is a brief and visceral story about sudden machine gun blasts; the latter an ethereal sex tune. Behind both and, in fact, the whole project is up-and-coming Jamaican producer, The Wizard, the daughter of one Beres Hammond. Stay tuned to LargeUp for more on The Wizard here soon—and look out for the “Rugu Rugu” video, too.

A LargeUp Exclusive Webisode – Shot by Martei Korley Words by DJ Gravy

Take a ride with Largeup as we tag along with Dancehall crossover star, Mr. Lexx.  Of all JA artists, Lexx has achieved a feat rarely pulled off with such style, maintaining an international presence in various circuits for over a decade, possibly due of his comical, friendly nature, ambitious working ethic and monstrously bass-y voice.
