Video: Protoje “Kingston Be Wise”

Words by DJ Theory—

A very large and undeniably inspired roots and culture tune from JA singer Protoje surfaced in inboxes recently, with a quick and solid response from some of the industy’s elite. The song—produced by frequent Protoje collaborator and big boss Don Corleone— rides impeccable 80′s digital roots style production, with Protoje delivering the message in fine style and giving a taste of what to look forward to in his upcoming sophomore EP, The 8 Year Affair. The video—running through and high above the streets and garrisons of Kingston—embodies this short story he wrote two years ago, based on the events of May 23rd, 2010 when the Jamaican government deployed its military into Tivoli Gardens in West Kingston.

If you’re feeling the song and video, be wise and let the world and the team know by tweeting @Protoje @doncorleonie with hashtag #KBW. Download the lyrics, wallpaper, artwork and short story here, and look out for the record when it drops in early 2013.

LargeUp TV: MissLikkleBit’s Hilltop Bounce

Words by Jesse Serwer, Photo and Video by Martei Korley—

If you’ve been to dancehall parties in New York, or ever tried to learn how to Bruk It Down, you may have come across our friend, MissLikkleBit. You may have also caught her choreography live on stage during one of Major Lazer’s insane live shows. The diminutive, Jamaica-born dynamo, who has amassed nearly 2 million views for her astounding interpretation of Mr. Vegas’ latest hit, is one of the most talented dancehall dancers we know. You’d never know it from her humble demeanor, though, which flies in great contrast to most of her contemporaries.

Fashion Fridays: Yahdie Conscious

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Yahdie Conscious mint eyelet cut-out romper

We’re always looking for local Caribbean fashion labels with the potential to make an impact on an international level. Our friends at Kingston Style just put us on to a great one in Yahdie Conscious, a Jamaican womens’ line with an aesthetic that’s right on time with trends in yaad and abroad. While the name Yahdie Conscious evokes thoughts of rootswear, it’s dresses and rompers are something more sophisticated, and the aesthetic is complemented by a line of head ties called GlamHEAD. Kingston Style recently interviewed Yahdie Concsious and GlamHEAD founder Jami Spence about her inspirations, and the direction of her twin lines. Check out some looks from both lines below, and read the interview here.

Garrison Cinema: Watch Cham’s “Lawless” Video

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Cham’s “Lawless” (produced by JA Productions for Madhouse Records) is easily one of the best dancehall tunes of the season, a badman anthem with shouts to just about every garrison community on the island of Jamaica, from Kingston hotspots like Tivoli, Gully and Seaview to Spanish Town and Flankers in Montego Bay. Cham doesn’t hit all of these in the video (directed by a guy called Dennis Brown—any relation?) but the visual tour of Kingston is quite comprehensive. This is a rare instance of a dancehall video that looks exactly like the song sounds. Mad!

On a windy afternoon this August, LargeUp creative director/co-founder/chief photographer Martei Korley and myself traveled to the New Kingston apartment of Tommy Lee—or, as he’s now 100% officially known, Tommy Lee Sparta—to interview dancehall’s most talked-about new artist, for The Fader. We watched Jamaica’s 1-2-3 finish in the men’s 200-meter final at the Olympics (after which Usain Bolt gave TV cameras the Gaza salute while boasting “Man, psycho!”) in the artist’s living room, and talked about why his music is so dark (he’s got some pretty compelling reasons), his plans to make conscious tunes (sample his first one, “No Love” over at MissGaza.com), and his desire to be a role model for di youth dem. Read the full story, which appears in the magazine’s upcoming Issue #82, out on newsstands next week, here.
