Dust A Video Bwoy: Watch Kanye West’s “Mercy” Visuals

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Yesterday, we brought you the story of Super Beagle, the unsung but greatly talented Jamaican singer known for the ’90s dancehall classic, “Dust A Sound Boy,” a tune itself known for having one of the greatest intros of all-time, courtesy of legendary dubplate figure Fuzzy Jones. Among other things, Beagle shared his high opinion of Kanye West’s latest single, “Mercy,” which samples and has brought new light to “Dust a Sound Boy.”: “As an artist from Jamaica, we always think or hope that one day an artist like Kanye would sample your work, take it another level to show that people are really listening to our work, not only everyday people, but people [from] far away,” Beagle told LargeUp’s Sherman Escoffery. “It’s a good feeling, and I recommend and endorse it.”

Now Things: A Q+A with Watch the Throne Producer Sham “Sak Pase” Joseph

Words by Jesse Serwer—

Haitian-American producer Shama (Sham) Joseph first landed on our radar with his production for Rihanna’s “Man Down.” The reggae-flavored hit (now officially a touchstone) brought RiRi back to her Caribbean roots but also grabbed our attention with the opening tag, “Sak Pase!”— “What’s happening” in Kreyòl. Building on the momentum of “Man Down,” Sham placed “Who Gon Stop Me” and “Made it in America,” two of the best tracks on Kanye West and Jay-Z’s blockbuster Watch the Throne album. Apparently, he was just getting warmed up, though, as a partial list of the artists he’s working with currently reads like a list of hip-hop, R&B and dancehall’s biggest hitmakers of the last 10 years: Sean Paul, T.I., Keyshia Cole, Usher, Ciara, Busta Rhymes, Chris Brown, Mavado. So whether you’ve got Haitian friends or not, get used to hearing “Sak Pase!” a whole hell of a lot. We recently spoke with the Fort Lauderdale, Florida native over the phone from his current homebase in Atlanta.

Fashion Fridays: 5 Things Dee Jackson Is Rockin’

Words by DJ Gravy via Complex

If you were out and about in NYC around Summer 07, you probably started seeing these two young fashionistas twins. They had a different look going on and what stood out were their lego accessories they wore along with bow tie, button down, shorts and high socks–not what you picture when you think of 20 year old kids from Staten Island back then. The ‘Twins’ big break came when their Lego belt buckle made it into a Marc Jacobs show. After that they became downtown staples dubbed The Fashion Twins. Pretty soon after that, their lego heart-shaped brooches, belt buckles and cigarettes were selling at Colette in Paris, Kid Robot in NY and being sported by Kanye West, Beyonce, MIA and of course Okayplayer founder ?uestlove.

Watch Me Now: Selita Ebanks x Kanye West

Words by Eddie STATS Houghton

runaway-kanye-west

If you stay up on industry gossip you already know that Selita Ebanks, the Grand Cayman native and runway model we featured in our Toppa Top 10 Caribbean supermodels has been making moves with rap’s enfant terrible Kanye West, getting snapped paparazzi style in the superstar’s presence whenever she’s not being seen out and about with UK artist Donaeo, of “Party Hard” fame. This week, however, Ms. Ebanks is making a different kind of move with Kanye; a power move. Ebanks appeared recently in a one-minute preview clip of the short film West directed to accompany his moody relationship ballad “Runaway.” Selita plays the part of the phoenix–which may or may not be a metaphor for Ye’s career–rising from the ashes of some studio-feature sized explosions. There are also fragmentary shots of a skittish Bambi-looking whitetailed deer and a ballerina–which may or may not be metaphors for the delicate females who should run away from Kanye as fast as they can, per the title. This is not the first time sporting wings for Selita, who has worked the runway as a Victoria Secret angel. She stopped short of revealing all her secrets for Kanye’s viewfinder, however, apparently turning down his initial request to do the film in the nude. Oh well, gentlemen, you can still hope for a Bond movie somewhere in her future. Update: watch the full 34-minute film below:
